Try hanging the feeder and getting a "bell" to go on top of the feeder. Like others have answered, a coated bell with vasoline or oil keeps the ants from getting inside or too the feeder itself. I had the same problem until my father showed me the bell trick. Worked rather well, but the bees still battled with the hummingbirds.

A glass feeder won't be different. Try a non-toxic insect repellent applied to the wire from which the feeder hangs, and applied to the tree or structure from which the feeder hangs. Other substances that discourage ants are petroleum jelly, applied as suggested above; vinegar or powdered cloves applied to ant trails; and adhesive tape applied sticky-side-out to the hanging wire. Moving the feeder doesn't work because the ants eventually find it. Do not use toxic repellents or insectisides or other sprays that kill ants. The birds will injest it and die.

1. Hang the feeder don't just lay it on a table or rail.
2 If it is hanging put an ant trap near the base off what ever it's hanging on. They make one that when ants feed on it they will take it back to the nest and feed it to the colony and kill the whole ant colony.

Out double sided sticky tape or fly paper on the railing around and under it it will keep the ants out of the food but you still have the ants to clean up every once in a while.
Ants get into anything. weather it's hanging or sitting if it has sugar in it your pretty much foobared.

can you hang it up from the edge of the porch? that would be your best bet. If no, try used coffee grounds around the edges of the railings and where the ants come from. the ground itself loves the used grounds good for the soil and ants don't particularly like them.
Check with your local herbalist there may be another easy deterrent that is not harmful to the enviroment

I've never heard of one sitting, but try putting a line of Vaseline or a thin line of an oil based product so they can't pass over. We hang ours on a wire and coat the wire with oil and never have a problem with ants.

Put some of that sticky stuff around the base of it. I can't think of the name right now, but we use it to keep ants off our citrus trees. It's at Home Depot.

I would think hanging it would be better for the birds since they very rarely sit still to feed. Try putting some baking soda around the area or some black pepper, not exactly sure how to take care of this.....

instead of sitting on the rail or porch, why not hang it from the eave or roof?
