This is for research for my novel. I know that if you're a cop, there's a device that allows him to change the light from red to green, and is in emergency vehicles. Do you know what it's called?

It is a electronic gadget in the stoplight. Some are set for a longer time than others, depending on the traffic. Don't know what it is called. Call the Street Department and ask them.

Wow that is really interesting. I have NO CLUE what that is, in fact I didn't even know there was such a device.. but I am sure when you find out it will add to the theme of your novel, it sounds exiting. Let me know when you are done with your novel I will buy a copy. I love to read, and that sounds exiting.

If there is such a device, then I don't know what it is. All emergency vehicles, police included, have a CODE 3, LIGHTS and SIREN, that anounces thier coming approach.

A lot of the answers were correct.....it's called an "opticom" (not sure on the spelling) and it's illegal for anyone to have except law enforcement and fire vehicles.

Today I think it's done with a radio signal, but a while back a strobe light would do it or you could just flash your lights real fast.

Only works on the lights that have the strobe receptor above the signal. You'll see it.

I don't know what it is, but I've heard that fire engines have them too. You could stop by a fire department and ask them.
