ear infection could be caused by many factors. sometimes too much water in the ear from swimming, or generally from getting water in your ear and it gets trapped or some people are just more likey to catch infections. any infection in general involves either bacteria or virus. bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, viral once are usually difficult to treat because we haven't yet got anti virus that kill viruses. if you do not see the Dr, there is a possibility that your body fight the infection, but the pain associated with the infection sometimes is too difficult to deal with. my advise is to take painkiller for now specifically ibuprofen as its an anti inflammatory and book an appointment to see the dr. ASAP.

Bacteria If you dont see a doctor you will probably get a perforated eardrum as the pressure builds leaving you with deafness and/or a discharge from the ear.
Get it seen to, it will be a 5 min examination and a few days on antibiotics, no big deal!

This lady's post is 6 years old.. but,in case anyone comes across this like I did...let me just say, Heating pads incubate the bacterium in the infected ear. Anytime you're laying down you should lay with your bad ear pointed down to allow for drainage out of the ear. Laying the other way causes the infected pus and drainage to migrate towards the ear drum. A good way to assist in this is to use a doughnut seat as a pillow with your bad ear to it's center hole. If you don't have one, like I didn't, pour dry rice into a pair of clean socks, fill it tight and tie them off with a rubber band(with no metal pieces on it). Situate them around your ear as you're laying down. these are meant to replace your pillow (wash your pillow cases too in hot water in the washer-to kill any germs from before you realized you had an infection) until your ear is healed and cleared of pus. the benefit of the socks too is that you can microwave each one for 2 minutes (hence the no metal part) and it'll help with the pain that radiates around the ear..i.e. towards the temple. but never put the heat directly over the ear opening. Bacteria need warmth and moisture to grow. Not a good plan. The peroxide is a very good tool. It does help clear the ear. But,the muffled sound is going to be there until the ear can heal itself. Ear infection cause damage to the ear drum so, that's why even after your ear has drained,it'll still seem muffled. Don't use things in your ears like hairpins,keys,q-tips because of the bony area of the ear canal's skin is almost paper thin and it tears easily. If your ear is itchy,it's likely allergies, use some benedryll first. If that doesn't help buy some OTC ear oil ,as sometimes it's dry skin. Some people even have eczema or psoriasis patches in their ears . It'll be a good idea to have yourself looked at when you don't have an infection by and ear, nose, throat DR so they can see what state your ear is in on an otherwise healthy day.Since those last conditions are usually present without infection. You may also have a condition called swimmer's ear. It's always wise for persons (especially those prone to ear infections) to use silicon ear plugs( for swimming, showers, baths) or cotton balls with petroleum (showers, baths) if they're going to be exposing their ears to water. If you still get water in your ear ,use swimmer's ear drops to help dry it or buy an EAR-VAC (you can find them on Amazon). If it's windy or rainy or both outside, again use the earplugs or cotton balls. I want to repeat: NEVER TOOL YOUR EARS! The Ear-Vac is fine because it does not enter your ear past the canal opening..unless you're forcing it.. But,especially, never tool your ears when they are WET! The reason is because the water softens the already paper thin skin, making it much more susceptible to infection. When you have a cold, flu, sore throat, drink plenty of hot cocoa, teas with honey and/or lemon, use hot water and shaved ginger to drink, cayenne in your food, chew gum,eat soups things like that. Things that keep your throat and ear tubes warm and open to drain pus and such away effectively. And yes smoking causes it too,the others are right. Using Tylenol or Ibuprofen is definitely a good help in pain management, just remember if there are children with the pain, swelling and fever..don't use anything with aspirin or acetaminophen for those under 12 yrs of age. And BTW no honey for those under 5 yrs of age! Antibiotics do only work for bacteria made infection so,using the methods for cold and such helps with the virus type. But,you can only know which it is by visiting your DR. It's a lot of trouble to care for your ears.. but,if you're like me who has chronic ear troubles,it's important to fight the good fight..you'll still lose once in awhile but,not trying as hard as you can just invites trouble.

They can be caused by a virus or bacteria. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections.

Most ear infections are fungal, bit like athletes foot. You had that and then put your finger in your ear, that will do it.

Go to the docs, you will need antibiotics to clear it up, and it won't go without antibiotics. You may have caught it from someone, its an infection.
