yea
You ask a rebbe over there, why he does if it's an act of self harm... and he replies.."It's just a bad habit that helps me deal with all the stress." Ask a soldier over there why, and he, or she says, "Well, we all have to die sometime anyway, eh?" It is a VERY high stress environment with a cultural equivilant of the U.S. in the sixties and seventies. Smokes are cheap and plentifull and allowed everywhere. It will be a while before this changes...if ever!

Lack of self control, or self-respect.
So many start so young to be cool then the effects of addiction are sooo hard to brake.
Wanting immediate satisfaction vs. long term stability
Smoking is an ugly thing, it really does take over your entire body when it craves it so badly... The last time I saw my grand-dad alive, he was in the smokers wing at the hospital (back when they had smokers corners) smoking, the next time I saw him, he was being pulled out of the fridge systems in the morgue, his skin was purple and yellow from the nicotine trying to leave his pores as he laid there still and lifeless.

People continue to smoke despite 25 years or more of warnings from the Surgeon General of the US, educational ads on television, educational non-smoking programs at schools, massively increased taxes on cigarettes, etc. They continue to do so because they are naive and believe that "nothing will happen to me" or "I won't become addicted". Of course, later in life when they get ill with emphysema, cancer, congestive heart disease, or numerous other illnesses...then they expect all of the rest of us to 1)feel sorry for them and 2)pay for their health care.

I don't know. My dad has been a smoker for about 20 years now and you can definately see the affects. He is in his mid-40's and looks like he is in his 60's!!
I am in my twenty's, and a girlfriend of mine is 24....she has been smoking since high school and she is now trying to get rid of her wrinkles...WRINKLES!! Wow! I hope that i don't have to deal with that until I am in my 30's.
It's known that it kills...the only thing I can thing is that these people are ignorant in that way.

It's a drug. Being 10 years cigarette-free, I can tell you that you can very quickly go from a social smoker to a full-on pack-a-day smoker and then have a hell of a time quitting. I wish they'd just stop manufacturing them.

In short. Their desire and addiction is greater than long-term self-preservation. Living in the present rather than looking towards the future.

Because they don't really believe it will kill them when they start smoking, and it is addictive and by the time they believe it then they can't stop.
