Phishing is an attempt to steal information from you, should as paswords, credit card numbers, bank actount numbers, etc. Often done by sending you any e-mail that claims to be from you bank or credit card company. Will have a link that you click that takes you to a FAKE bank or credit card company page that ask you for your information. The Phishing filter is suppose to warn you when you are on a fake page so that you will not accidently send your information to the wrong people.

I like the other answers, but here is a personal experience using the IE7 filter: I received an email from (fake) eBay website concerning possible unusual account activity. I was asked to click on the link provided to inquire about this "activity" and confirm any errors. If I did not have the filter, I would have responded as asked, and here is what would have happened:
1. I would click the link, go to another website, and would have been asked to confirm my eBay account by answering questions like, what is your credit card #, home phone number and address
2. The fraudulent website would then have my account numbers to do what they wanted at will. That is what phishing is, and the filter warns you not to proceed. A very valuable tool.

It prevents phishing sites from acting and behaving like original banking or financial sites. Previously phishing operators could mask the url and trick the user into thinking that the site was legitimate. After keying in their personal details, their passwords would be harvested and funds would be transferred out.

It filters criminial activity. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an electronic communication.

What da H3//? You've got the same nickname and avatar as me! WTF?? Well, filters usually protect your computer from viruses, identity theft (I think), some websites and what you download (i.e. porn), just crap like that.

It's still freaky about your nickname and avatar are the same as mine and how we became members of the Yahoo ask/answer thing on the same month.
