Now this is a really silly question and I will give a silly answer. does it not depend on how old the pod is and have you ever tried counting them all yourself ? Further to the point, how many catterpillars are there in a pod of peas.

depends on the pod size... some are just two! some 4-5 or 6!

Depends on how mature you let them get before you pick them. I've had some with just 1 lonely little pea others with 8.
