Look at low cost accomodation outside of York, like Travel lodges on the A64. It wiould be cheaper to get a taxi back there, or 3 taxis if there are 12 of you. You want to do York on the cheap? Ha, you may as well believe in fairies.

i went to travellers inn in york, its £60 a night, 2beds and you can have as many people stay in there as you like as its per room not person, theres on suite bathrooms with a bath and shower, i usually go to gigs all over the country and iv never had a bad experience in one of them, you get your own key card too so you can come in when ver you want... you get loads of free coffee and tea too...
i actually went to the one in york, 3mins from trainsstation and 10mins from town center, walking...x
