Okay i got my puppy when she was about 4 weeks old and had to bottle feed her. I got her so early because momma dog got so sick she had to be seperated from her. Well my uncle use to raise pit bulls and rotts and he has always told me dont use your hand to dicipline them for many reasons so i use the news paper, I understand that she is a puppy and is gonna chew but even if we are just chilling if i go and pet her she thinks we are playing and she starts to bite. not hard at first but it gets harder.... now This is where my problem lies.. i live with a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I dont want her bitting on them and cant seem to get her to stop bitting. If any of you have any suggestions please help me and thanks for taking the time to help me with this (also she has all kinds of chew toys and hard chew bones) thanks and have a good day.

she has lots of toys to play with and i play with her all the time and show her that they are hers.. she plays for 5 seconds and then wants to play with your feet or something.. She is already kennel trained as best she can be at 10 weeks old my uncle told me that if she bits to make her bite her own lip and its shows her that her teeth hurt but that dont seem to bother her at all.. She is not like this when we are at my parents house and the big dogs are there with her. but we play all day long.. other than her lil bitting thing because she thinks she has to play all the time i dont have any problems with her and i know she will grow out of it. She is really smart now and does a lot of cool things so anything will help thanks

Now forget those ueless theories of 'give her a toy'; spray her with water; 'ignore her'; distract her; or spray your hands with smelly stuff - ummm, for how many years?? Another inadequate on is to hold her mouth closed or push you hand further into her mouth - great, you have just escalated the game and made it more fun - and she is playing with you.

Puppies bite - that is how dogs and puppies play with each other. He thinks he is playing with you by mock fighting. Its a dog's favorite game - watch two good dog buddies ripping tearing rolling - and diving at each other and grabbing without puncturing.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO WHATSOEVER WITH TEETHING

You have to DO something about it.

Now what is really really neat is your puppy came pre-programmed to understand certain behavior as disapproval and approval. In dog language, behavior is communication.

In a group of dogs, if he nipped the leader and the leader was not amused, they would knock him over, grab the skin on his neck or the side of his face and pinch it without breaking the skin, and growl.

So do what they would do. That is something a dog understands instinctively. Lot of theories out there about yelping in pain and pushing him away (duh...that is what the dog who LOST the mock fight does and the winner is the boss now) or all this other stuff - but your puppy didn't read those books!

Step One: Learn to use your voice. Mot people either let their voice slide up in register or they sound futile and weak. You want to deepen your voice and sound like a drill sergeant. The word NO is basic to doggy manners (and people too.). The deep sound mimics the rumble/growl of the top dog.

Step Two: Do what the leader would does physically (well, mimic it - biting him wouldn't be fun.)

When he nips at you, roar NO in a deep voice, grab him by the collar or back of the neck, push him down and hold him on the ground and as you are doing that and snap your fingers on the end of his nose or slap his nose with your fingers. While you pin him down and get his nose, lean over him and keep saying BAD BAD BAD - do NOT let your voice slide up, make it deep. Make him look at you and keep eye contact – make your face stern and frown as you get after him.,

Step Three: when you let him up, you relax your voice and face and say "okay, now be nice" and let him come back over and get petted. (That is the postive part.) The more he settles down and gets petted without nipping, the happier your voice gets.

Get after him about EVERY SINGLE TIME - you must be 100% consistent.

You can buy every chew toy and toy made and it is not going to stop her from biting. Only TIME will stop it. All pups think play time is 24/7.

Lots of exercise helps. Two walks a day about an hour each will help immensely. She is going to be a large, muscular dog. I would suggest obedience training as soon as a class will accept her. She is going to be a lot to handle.

I use the water spray bottle with my dog. No matter what he is doing all I have to do is ask aloud, "where is my water?" and he stops whatever he is doing. I love it because it doesn't hurt them in any way. I tried shaking the coins in a can and that didn't work at all. You could try the water. If you do, make sure you rinse the bottle and put in fresh water every week.

The water will not replace the class. Watch the small kids around her. NEVER leave them alone in the same room.

I just read the answers above mine. No wonder dogs turn on their owners!!!!!! PLEASE do not : 1) Hit your dog with anything. Not even your hand. 2) Do not kennel your dog for punishment.3) Do not pinch your dog. 4) Do not spray your dog with vinegar or any other substance, except water. What happens when you, by accident, spray the dog in the eyes?

I have had personal, very sad experience with this breed, which I will not go into. I would not have this breed anywhere near children of any age. After my experience I would not have this breed in my house. But, until it is against the law, you can do anything you choose to. I was only making suggestions to you to make your life easier with this dog.

your problem stems from her not being with the dam and siblings long enough to learn bite inhibition. dogs use there mouth to check things out. when she starts to chew on ur hand, curl her upper lip under her teeth so she feels her own bite. this will help. also, when she does bite too hard, "yelp" or make a loud "ouch" and end the play session. this is how the mom/littermates handle it. never hit the dog with anything, it only teaches them that you can't be trusted. good luck and be patient. in the end you will wind up with a great pet. (never mind those who don't understand the breed)

YOu should never hit your dog with anything including the newspaper. Dogs are very smart and your dog can see and remember that it is you holding that newspaper. In order to get her to stop biting and play with her toys, you must show her how to play with one. She might not know at first. Pick up a toy and shake it gently in front of her and say something like "I'll bet you can't get this" and continue shaking the toy and move it away a little bit. She will bite the toy. Let her have it. She will shake it herself and bite it. Do this several times and she will play by herself.

I have 4 dogs and we always did this when they were puppies: If you are going to pet the puppy and he tries to bite open your hand so the plam of your hand is right in front of his nose. It distracts them and there is nothing for them to bite. Then pet him as norma and tell him what a good boy he is. It takes a lot of repetition, but it worked with all 4 of my dogs. Good Luck.

best thing to do is be the one in charge. when she starts chewing on you, hold around her nose and firmly but calmly said NO BITE. do this everytime she even starts to bite. its really helping with my dog. she's just about done teething and man was it rough. but now she's able to mouth us without using her teeth most of the time. unless she's just being a brat. but she was so young when she was taken from her mom that she didnt learn how to behave, so you have to take the place of the mom and let her know whats acceptable. dont hit, even with the paper. momma dog would never do that (well, maybe a paw swipe if shes REALLY out of control)

I have a two year old, a four year old, a female apbt, a male apbt, and a pitbull mix who I've had since she was 5.5 weeks old.

Do not ever hit your dog...not even with a newspaper.

I suggest getting a travel size spray bottle from Walmart and filling it with distilled white vinegar. When she goes to chew on your hands or anything else inappropriate, give her a squirt in the mouth.

Whenever she puts her mouth near your hand or anyother negative activity IMMEDIATLY dicipline her. If she's a smart dog then she'll make the connection, this behavior = punishment. I hope those children aren't yours. If you don't know how to discipline your dog, I can't imagine how screwed up your children already are.

you need to be stern by saying no. she needs to know "no" means it's bad or wrong. it's normal for pups to do this cuz they're just playing around and also as they grow up, they start to teethe. it's uncomfortable for them so they like to chew on things. but a stern "no" is like a bark that her momma would do to put her in line.
