How long does it take?

Because of the distance it will always take at least 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there.
If it is during the weekend and that early you don't really have to worry about the traffic (people don't go to work during the weekend and people don't wake up early either). So you'd be there in about 1 hour and 20 to 30 mins.
If it's during a weekday you could take from one hour and 45 mins in the best of the cases up to 2 hours and 30 mins in the worst of the cases (some accident, etc.).
What I do when I have to go the Bay Area is to drive late at night and stay at some friends house overnight. On the next morning I just leave my car at my friend's place and take the BART to move around.
You can also take the AMTRAK from Sacramento, sometimes it can even be faster than driving... and cheaper.
BTW, once I made it with no traffic at night from the Bay Area to Sac in 1 hour and 5 mins plus a ticket from CHP :'(

I-80 is always bad during the morning weekday commute. Give yourself plenty of time if you're driving.

Weekends should be fine (unless it's a holiday, and people are returning to California from Reno).

You could also ride Amtrak (Capital Corridor) and transfer to the BART subway system in Richmond. It's less stressful. I know some people who do this on a regular basis, and they seem happy to have time to read the paper and have a proper breakfast on the way to work.

Anytime you hit The City at Rush hour is bad, however I've gone left Sac at 8 and made it to downtown by 9:30 with no problem both on Weekdays and weekends, Weekends being my preference.

Traffic in sacrademented during the morning rush hour is bad on the weekdays, and traffic going into frisco is also bad. If you really need to get into the city during rudh hour try BART, there are many stations where you can park and ride along I-80.

I sometimes had to leave at 7am from Sacramento to bay area and it would take over 2 hrs. If you HAVE TO drive, get off the freeway and pick-up casual carpoolers at the North Berkeley BART station and then you can get on the car pool lane and cut your commute from the East Bay to the city by half. I would advise taking the Amtrak as it's much nicer and hassle free.
