Pork is not used in pet foods because in the list of meats that cats AND dogs can digest, pork is WAY down the list.

At the top is eggs, followed by chicken and other poultry. then you have lamb and fish. then you would have your beef and pork. Any company that nows about pet nutrition would realize that putting pork in the food means that it compromises the pets health because even though the package may as 32% protein, because they can't digest pork, they really only absorb 15% of the protein.

Low grade companies like Purina, Pedigree, Iams, Science Diet, etc would use pork but it would most likely be labelled as 'animal' or 'meat'....meaning the company got it from a rendering plant and has no idea what is actually in the food.

So, just for the record, if you do a bit of digging, you will find that this is the correct reason.

Pork used to be a very fatty meat. The pork chops and loin roasts we get now are much leaner. Of course bacon is still high in fat content.

It is not a meat that a housecat or a small wild cat would be eating. Lions, leopards, etc. do bring down warthogs are prey and their diet is still mostly lean antelope, zebra or buffalo.

Like another poster said pork is an expensive meat, high qualtiy chicken, beef and lamb are the same. So pork in cat food would probably be by-product meat, not good food for cats or humans.

As a raw meat feeder I learned early on that you do not use pork in making up your recipes for your cats.

From all of this with NO MEANINGFUL ANSWERS....It appears that pork fat with with some included protein "MIGHT" not be good for cats? SO the real question might be: Pork Loin, properly cooked may well be as good as cooked white chicken breast. Can this be confirmed OR denied? What would a dog/cat Nutritionist Specialist have to say about all of this- especially considering PORK LOIN "The Other White Meat".
This all sounds like total BS. causing many of us to ask: What s the Real Reason? Is it just pure Economics?
Is there ANY CERTIFIED ANIMAL NUTRITIONIST OUT THERE_ ANYWHERE? What s wrong with "pork loin"? "Gimmeananswer! OR else...i am going to feed my precious cats .....Pork Loin.....!!!!!

I just Googled this question and it led me here. I just wondered because every cat I've ever had has LOVED ham. Loved it to the point where they'll follow me around after eating some hoping I have some more and will drop some.

Generally it's too expensive. Bad cuts of pork may be used under the "meat byproducts" label.

I am not aware of any health reason cats can't eat pork, but I am not a vet.
