Wow, there seems to be some serious hostility towards sushi. First I will tell you that it is not just in So Cal, it is all accross the country. I personally like sushi, so I am not sure what the problem is. But if you do not like it, and you have a date who wants to go, there is always still fried rice, fully cooked rolls, and many other options of things to eat. There are a lot of reasons sushi has become so popular:
1) It tastes good (maybe not to you, but to those that eat it).
2) It is very healthy
3) It looks sophisticated (like wine, if you know what you like and not makes you seem cultured)
4) It is a completely unique food, no where but in a sushi bar will you get anything like it
5) You can get a variety of different kinds and try things out without really committing
6) You (as a girl) can eat a small amount and not "pig out"
7)It is an interesting atmosphere condusive for talking but not overly intimate for a first date. That is probably the biggest reason it is so big with dating.
If you have a date that wants to go there, go for it. There are so many different kinds of food there, it is just the primary focus that is on sushi. Most have a full menu. If you are so against even going there (makes you sick to see it) then just say it is not your thing, and have something else interesting in mind. I you can offer up a good idea that is not just Red Lobster or something cheesy they probably will not care.
-BTW- to chrstnwrtr a California Roll is not rice rolled up in a tortilla. A california is a standard rice/sea weed outside with Avacado,Cucumber, Salmon, and Cream Cheese in it (as well as a few other things I think). There no tortilla involved. Whoever told you that was a California Roll was joking or way off. FYI

Why the swearing? If it's a general answer question you want...then why are you being so verbal about it?
In anycase. Sushi is a fad right now. It's considered trendy because it's new. Girls tend to go more for the trendy fads. It's healthy, good for you and, although I don't personally agree, tasty. So that is why sushi is a 'big deal' and why girls want to eat it. And it's not just girls you know. Guys like sushi too.
Tone down the language.
Thanks.

I am in California, I dislike Sushi. Why would I want to go to a fish place, maybe these so-cal guys think if they go eat some fish, they will get to eat some more later. You know??
I think its all Laguna Beaches fault, on the recent episode they ate Sushi on a date, now everyone HAS to eat Sushi.
These fads are so retarded. I'm sorry.

Everyone has their own taste in foods. I live in San Diego, and yes sushi is popular here. We live by the beach. I guess lots of people here enjoys seafood.
Also, lots of sushi places have a cool atmosphere and the social vibe is pretty laidback and chill for a date.
I personally love sushi. It's healthy and so good. I used to hate it when I was a kid, but I grew to love it, and now it's my favorite food.

Because women are obssesed with dieting to be thin like the movie stars who eat no more than 600 calories a day. Sushi is the food of anorexics (I am one) it is minimal calories, without the rice and even with the rice, it has very little and is very healthy and filling. so if you are a woman, you can eat but not feel guilty while trying to live up to the movie stars ideals.

I can't understand either; maybe it's because it's allegedly healthier than burgers.
What's so great about eating raw fish anyway? Now I happen to like California Rolls which are clumps of rice rolled into a tortilla but raw fish?
If you're going to eat fish, eat fish and chips with real beer-battered fish fillets and french fries. Hey, if you're a San Diego native like me, you'd know better and eat Rubio's Fish Tacos instead!

It's following a trend that anything Asian is cool. I can't give any further explanation along this line of reasoning without sounding like a racist son of a b*tch, but sit yourself down and watch some Saturday morning cartoons to understand what I'm talking about. You'll either be watching an anime, or an American cartoon that LOOKS like an anime.

Hey, dude, sushi is a big deal all over the world.
Personally, i love all Asian food, whether it's Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Korean, tulegraude, you name it. But the reason why sushi is the big craze to hit SoCal (as well as SF) is simple… it's expensive!
Women want to see that you are willing to shower them with attention, gifts, orgasms; but most importantly, money! If you can't foot the $200 sushi bill, most women will want to walk away before committing their soccer mom happiness in your direction.
If you want to impress a great, beautiful woman, it's sushi and sake hands down!
Wish you luck!
