My very intelligent 2-year old daughter still acts like an infant when it comes to putting things in her mouth. Some of our less sturdy items get ruined from her bad habit. Any ideas of what I can try to break her from this?

Time and attention.

All children put everything in their mouth. Its normal. You need to make sure you tell her "No!" evertime. Don't make a big deal, just take it away and say no. You might try teaching her how to hold and look at things, but she will be 3 or 4 or 5 before she starts that behavior regularly.

Hotsauce on particular things you don't want her to touch is ok, but just a little. And a personal toy, like a stuffed animal or a small blanket, is great for distracting her.

It takes time, but after awhile, she will get it. Then she will start doing other things to annoy you. This will keep up with new behaviors every year for quite a while. Enjoy it!

After she grows up and gets married, she can transfer this behavior to her husband, and you and her can have a great relationship.

Its normal and she will grow out of it, usually sometime before her 4th birthday. When you see her put something in her mouth, take it away, say no, and redirect her attention. She'll eventually get the picture. Don't pay such close attention to all those "milestones" the parenting books and magazines give you. They are averages, and no kid fits the "average". Also, some are flat out wrong. All kids are different and will hit the various milestones at different times. They will be early on some and late on others. They all have some special talents and some things they struggle with. That said, your daughter is by no means abnormal on putting things in her mouth at two. She is most likely using each one of her 5 senses to understand every object she finds, and that includes taste.

my son has been in a licensed daycare/school since he was 20 months old. The rooms are divided by age: (0-2yr in one room) etc. After each birthday, you move to the next room. My son is now 3.5 yrs old and is in the 3's room. There are 26 kids in his class and most of them older than him. They still put all of the toys in their mouth; which leads to the spreading of all the germs! My son always seems to be catching something. They disinfect the toys regularly, but some of us mothers have requested more frequent washings due to the large amount of children putting toys in their mouth. I think that it is just habit for some kids to keep inserting things into the mouth. My son stopped when he turned 3. We really started using the Sanitizer on his hands and everytime I saw him put something none edible into his mouth, I put it in "TOY JAIL" and made him wash his hands and sanitize. He did not get the toy back for a couple of days. A playpen works great as a toy jail. He could see that his toys were piling up in there and he could not get to them. He eventually stopped the bad habit. I hope this helps...you are not alone by any means.
