They told her that her blood counts in her liver were elevated and said that one of the causes of this was either alcoholism or hepatitis, well unfortunately for my mom she doesnt drink alcohol so I was just curious if anybody knew what to expect if you have hepatitis, what are the symptoms and is it curable?

it means she has a piss poor doctor. doctors should know better than to diagnose without testing. some doctor did that to me telling me my white blood cell count was so low he thought i had full blown aids - i don't. my neighbor had a doctor tell her he thought she had hepatitis, she doesn't. without a test they are guessing, just like anyone could do.

here's all kinds of info on the disease though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatitis

don't worry until the test results come back, getting informed on the disease is good, but don't get too upset based on a diagnosis with no testing. the doctor should have never told her it was one thing or the other, there are other things that can lead to elevated counts in her liver.

Hepatitis is somewhat serious. It could have been brought on by a few things. But I don't want to upset you. But yes with the right medication and if caught in time, it is curable depending on which one that it is. Some Hepatitis isn't curable. Ask your mom to be honest with you and to tell you what's going on. If she avoids the issue, go get a medical book and look everything up that you need to know and if you don't know what something means, ask someone older than yourself that has some knowledge of medicine or at least some hospital experience. Also you can maybe call a pharmacist anonymously just to inquire.

There are several kinds of hepatitis and you would have to be tested to find out which one she has. Just because your liver count is elevated doesn't necessarily mean you have hepatitis of any sort. However, if you have jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin) have very dark urine and light bowel movements, you're tired and your skin is dry, it is a strong possibility. Some hepititis strains are cureable, some are not. You can get them in several different ways. Hep B is something you would get having unprotected sex or working in a hospital environment where body fluids are located. Hep C would be something you would get directly from another infected person; ie drug addicts with needles, accidental sticks, pre-1980 blood transfusions, etc. not necessarily sex. HepA you would probably get from eating contaminated foods like shell fish, or perhaps through improper hand washing in a food area. And it goes on and on. All of them affect the health of your liver. And you cannot live without your liver. It's all very serious. I would wait until you get the results before I got all upset. Godblessya both.

Hepatitis A, B or C? http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/

Don't get too far ahead of yourselves with this. Let the doctor confirm what it is. You'll both make yourselves crazy with worry.

There are more than one type of Hepatitis. Type A is curable, Type C is usually terminal. It depends on which type she has.
