I do not think that God said, if you do not believe that I turned water to wine, you will go to hell. In fact, this story does not add any credibility to faith. There is no one who believe in Christ because of this story, no one, even if it were true. No one believe in the God because of Noah's ark, even if it were true.

Thus, you need to understand the message of the bible. To me the real mesage of Noah's ark is if you are led spiritually to build an ark, start a company, write a book, you ought to do it.

depends on what part of the Bible you are talking about. I believe the creation account is literal, 6 days to create it all. The Song of Solomon is very symbolic because it is poetry. Much of the Bible is a historical account, so, no symbolism there. Revelations is a little different because God gave John a vision of things that were going to happen thousands of years in the future (now) and he had to use the language of his day to explain things that had not even been conceived in mind of man yet. Imagine living 2k years ago and trying to put into words your vision of helicopters. What really matters is whether you believe the truth of the gospel message or not. there is no symbolism there, it is the straight truth.

Many parts are and are also written as parables
The most symbolic portion of the Bible is The Book of Revelations which is a description of The Holy mass (liturgy).

Yeah, i am catholic and i strongly believe that most things in the bible are symbolic and the stories are not all true but the point that they make is true and good to live by.. the bible contradicts its self many many times so you cant be for sure what part is 100% true and it leaves you to think that its just the meaning that counts .

The Bible is a poem telling you a way in which to live so a good deal of it is symbolic, but just because there is symbolism doesn't mean that a lot of it isn't real either. :^)

"You can't have your cake and eat it too."

Logically, if most of the things in the Bible are symbolic, it's pretty easy to assume that they all are. So, while you might be able to find societal values or messages in some passages, you should also remember the ones detailing the murder done in God's name, or even by God.

I guess I haven't gone through and tallied how much is literal and how much is metaphorical. So I can't knowingly say "most," but I can say "a lot."

It's also important to note how many of the literal things that did happen ALSO have symbolic meanings (the sacrificial lamb for example).

thanks

I believe that there are some things that are symbolic, true. But, the word of God is clear ... a sin is a sin, and Jesus is the only way to eternal life. There is no symbolism there.

It's really hard for them to understand that the Bible is just myth and symbolism, it's because preachers tell them it is fact based to be taken literally and it simply isn't.
