Sitting at my feet right now is a Corgi. He's the second Corgi I have had. Corgis are very easy to train and very affectionate. You couldn't go wrong if you chose the Corgi.

Some people say a dog from a shelter is the best, I agree to a point. Most dogs taken to a shelter are there because people buy them not knowing the responsibility involved in taking care of a pet. Some are there because they have behavioral problems. Go to your local rescue or shelter to get a dog...save a life, but ask why they are there.
There are also Corgi and Eskimo rescues all over the country.

Depends on how much room you have. Corgi are small dogs with a big head, they kinda look like a big dog that had its legs cut off (LOL), but they are a pretty durable dog. Corgi's do tend to be a bit hard to train sometimes, then others train rather easily. American Eskimo Dogs need a lot of room and they like to dig. Myself, personally, like the other posters, I prefer a mutt, they last longer and have less medical problems.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi - they have more of a big dog's attitude. Plus, they have cool personalities & take obedience training easier.

A friend of mine has Corgis. They are sooo smart and friendly. I wouldn't get an American Eskimo Dog. Too much hair :-(

If I must chose one of those I would chose my American Eskimo that passed a month ago.
But other than that I would stick with my two mixed breed dogs I have now.

Given the two choices I would go with the AED, Corgi's are rather difficult to manage from what I've heard. You should remember that AED's are working dogs and will need lots of exercise and attention. For me personally, I love my Labradors...
If you decide to get one, go to this link for information on contacting a proper breeder.

American Eskimo. My father has three of them and they are great. They do shed alot in the summer but they are very lovable and love to play. I love them very much.
