need a booster injection every twelve months.

Your dog needs a Vet check up every year. At that time he/she will get whatever boosters he/she needs. The Vet will also want a fecal sample to test for any parasites. The Vet basically gives the dog a physical.

Your dog should also be given heartworm medicine and flea/tick medicine monthly to prevent these problems too.

The responsibility of owning a dog (or in some cases the dog owning you) is much like raising a child.

Vets don't usually "scam" their patients.

New research (I believe through Purdue University's vet school) indicates that puppy vaccines protect a dog through life and no further shots are needed. I do not know if this is for just distemper, the distemper/parvovirus/etc. combo, or what exactly. I don't think they researched the Rabies vaccine, but I could be wrong.

I should add that giving the shots yearly is not a scam. It has just been believed that they were needed for protection. New info changes this belief.

I am sure they will have a very hard time selling this to vets in private practice.

You can have titers drawn. A titer test will help determine if an animal needs a booster shot of a vaccine or not. Quite often a dog has enough antigen in their system and does NOT require another booster.

Most Vets have gone to every 2 years for the combo vaccine. Rabies depends on the law in your state.

Most vaccines are for 3 years at a time now.

It's not a vet "scam" to see your dog each year though. It is being a responsible pet owner for you to take your pet for a checkup.

Yes,a dog needs a booster every year and if you think it is a scam by vets, then don't give it and if your dog comes in contact with parvo, distemper, etc,it will catch it.Give the annual booster.

Your dog needs the distemper and parvovirus vaccinations ever year to insure that he is protected against these diseases. Rabies is usually every 3 years, but my office gives it every 2 years because rabies is running rampant in New Jersey.

They should also have a yearly stool sample checked for parasites.

This has been much debated the past few years. Regardless, I still vaccinate my dogs yearly. I can't take the chance on them getting sick and dying.
