In my experience, it's only a problem if your proficiency in both languages is similar and if the languages themselves are similar (like Spanish and Italian). At the beginning stages it should be fine, because so much of what goes on in your head is structured and thought out. When you become more fluent in each, you might find yourself using a Russian vocabulary word in place of a German word or vice versa. But that's not really a problem with LEARNING the language, more with using it. And when you get to that point, you'll be in good shape. :)

There is very little linguistic research on your question that I am aware of. Any answer that people offer you that sounds definitive is just their opinion.
Whenever you learn a new language, it seems to be most affected by the language that you learned before. I am a native speaker of English, for example, and I learned Spanish and am now learning German. There has definitely been some crosslinguistic influence; I noticed, for example, when I was first learning German that I wanted to put adjectives after nouns like is usually done in Spanish. But after a time that went away and now the only time I really have trouble is if I am switching between the languages. Usually once I get into either "Spanish mode" or "German mode" I am fine.
I certainly know people who have been able to successfully learn more than two languages. I'd say go for it.
(By the way, in answer to practicalwizard's comment, I believe that German and Russian are very similar, since they are both Indo-European languages.)

Just go for it! I'm learning Greek and Chinese at the moment and I don't have any problems! German and Russian are not similar at all! Russian is hard, and it will became more complicated, I studied Russian in High School, but German is not too hard, and you'll manage to deal with both! Be patient and don't quit! Good luck!

I studied Spanish and Italian in college at the same time. Its not impossible but it was very stressful. I mixed up words. I would start speaking one language and end up speaking another. It just wasn't worth it.
I'm starting to learn Russian and i would cry if i had to learn another language along with it.

No, I'm finding out a couple of languages even as, you get combined up in many instances while you understand the phrase in a single language however can not suppose of it within the different however more often than not there is not any challenge in any respect. I uncover it is helping understanding more than one languages as in many instances they support you determine what one phrase manner within the different, I say opt for it. You'll handiest disregard French if you do not train it.

Um, I'm not sure. I mean, I'm in my fourth year of french and first year in German and Spanish. It's been sort of difficult for me because some words are the close and mean different things. I think, though, if you are dedicated and really want to learn, you will spend the time and energy it takes to do well.

As long as you are dedicated, motivated, and consistent with the languages that you are learning, then you should do fine. During my senior year of high school I was taking Japanese, Spanish, and French.

If you are going to take two different languages, make sure they are completely different from one another.
