Would i be wasting my time by only walking down the stairs and not up the stairs too, instead of taking the elevator. Since I know I would want to die by walking up at this point..

Absolutely not and congrats on taking practical steps to better health. The added walking distance, even if it is down stairs is great. Once you feel confident enough, try getting off the elevator on the 3rd floor and walk up one flight. Then start adding more until you're walking up all four floors with no problem. Best of luck!

walking down is a good idea. more exercise than the elevator and strengthens your knees. so do it! little by little you can walk up one flight, then when you are used to that, two etc. walking is better than riding because you are still shifting your weight and using your body not just standing there.
