I just found out that the ship I spent 4 years of my life onboard was sunk this last summer during Rimpac '06. I knew it was decommissioned last year, but had no idea they would sink it.

Anyone have any memories of her?

I agree that public opinion has gone against Obama in the last few months. The blame is usually put on health care reform, cap and trade, the stimulus, and unemployment. More than particular issues, there are certain dynamics that explain it. First, I think the administration appeared to stay out of some of the discussions in congress. So some issues look more like congressional initiatives than the president's. People were expecting more direction from the president. Congress and Pelosi are easier to dislike. Those opposing Obama say he should focus on the economy before going into other things. Nothing has come back from the administration and its supporters pointing out that the first things that happened when Obama came to office were the stimulus package and other steps to shore up the economy. At the time (1 yr ago) Obama said it would take two years. So far the stimulus has saved or created somewhere between 1.7 and 2.0 million jobs, depending on who you listen too. GDP is growing. Job loss has stopped. Construction is starting turn up. Housing prices have stabilized. Housing sales increased. There seems to be progress against the Taliban. Overall things are improving at a pace that should be expected. I think many people think things should be improving more quickly and that contributes to the negativity.

I feel your pain man my old ship USS LaSalle (AGF-3) is to be sunk as an artificial reef. The date hasn't been set yet but she's on the list. I am surprised useful ships like the belleau wood are being sunk when there are other allied navies that would love to have her. I guess if they can sink the USS America than nothing is sacred.

I was on the USS St Louis (LKA-116) and the USS Denver (LPD-9), 1981 to 1985. Did a lot of ops with the Belleau Wood. Sorry to hear she was put down. I hope she became a reef to contribute some thing good.

Sorry to hear she was sunk! She had a very good service record with only one minor accident.

A proud ship indeed thanks for your service on her.

Wow... sad, but nice to know we're getting some target practice out of the old girls... I flew off Midway, Independence, and Missouri shortly before they were decommissioned.

I never bounced off the deck of the Belleau Wood, but road home from Hawaii on the Denver. Always liked the big decks of the LHA and LSD... I respect you guys in the "Gator" Navy... my lil brother was a Div O and Dept Head on USS Juneau

I was an HSL (SH-60B's) Helicopter Aircrewman in the 80-90's detached to mostly FFG's and DD's... and have seen most of THEM retired.

She's the ship my husband served on 1983 - 1986. I was on the ship several times during that time frame.

They also sunk the Oriskany to create an artifical reef. Saw that on History channel.

thats the navy way. cheaper to sink them than to scrap them. lots of old amphibs to be decomm in the next year or two.
