Believe it or not, I've actually heard people describe homosexuals as "evil". How does an act between two CONSENTING adults make one evil?

Actually, not all gays are into anal sex, whereas some straight people are.

By the way, can anyone who thinks that it's evil come up with a better explanation than "The Bible says so"?

How is it unnatural? Humans aren't the only ones who are into it. It's been found in dogs, cats, sperm whales, and tsetse flies, among others.

By the way, I'm not gay. I'm a heterosexual female who believes that gays and lesbians should have the same opportunities and legal rights as straight people.

jan: There's a difference between homosexuality and your neighbor's breathing problem. A breathing problem is life-threatening. Homosexuality isn't. Also, if you believe that gays should be private about their relationships, don't you think straights should be, as well? Also, regardless of what you may have heard, there is no "cure" for homosexuality.

I have no idea. I've never seen it as evil.
Here is the REAL skinny on what the Bible has to say about homosexuality. Look... most people, even priests and pastors, misinterpret the passages about homosexuality.
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah? That's a condemnation of rape and inhospitality. The reason for Sodom's destruction is made clear in Ezekiel 16:48-50. According to Ezekiel, the sins of Sodom were pride, laziness, being inhospitable, neglecting the needs of the poor, greed, and idolatry (the worshipping of idols). Nothing about homosexuality is mentioned (intending to RAPE angels is NOT homosexuality).
Leviticus? Those passages were part of the Holiness Code which has been done away with and is no longer binding to modern-day Christians.
1 Corinthians? Mistranslation - the word malakee in this passage is used elsewhere in the Bible to mean someone who lacks discipline or one who is morally weak, and never is it used in reference to sexuality or gender.
1 Timothy? Also a mistranslation. 1 Timothy was an admonishment against male prostitution, not committed, loving same sex relationships.
Romans? In the passage the Greek words physin and paraphysin have been translated to mean natural and unnatural respectively. Contrary to popular belief, the word paraphysin does not mean "to go against the laws of nature", but rather implies action which is uncharacteristic for that person. An example of the word paraphysin is used in Romans 11:24, where God acts in an uncharacteristic (paraphysin) way to accept the Gentiles. When the scripture is understood correctly, it seems to imply that it would be unnatural for heterosexuals to live as homosexuals, and for homosexuals to live as heterosexuals.

You are asking why (some) people consider homosexuality to be evil and you don't want them to answer "because the Bible says so". Well, that is the only answer you are going to get from them. Consider that at the time the Bible was written, things were simpler and psychological, genetical and phisiological considerations did not exist. However, many people fail to realise that with the present knowledge, some considerations set forth in the Bible simply are outdated. Homosexuality is not a deviation, taken voluntarily by gays, but rather a natural impulse inbedded in them. Sin comes from choice between good and evil and if a person has no choice, there cannot be a sin.
I'm a hetero, therefore I do not defend or advocate homosexuality. It simply exists whether liked or not.

Nothing really...Your last point isn't true. Homosexuality was actually celebrated and encouraged in a lot of ancient cultures, such as Greek and Roman, as it is in the animal kingdom, including our closest mammal relatives. edit: Angeltress, please explain how ANY of that applies to lesbians ? They are homosexuals too... Also how come so many heterosexual couples have anal sex without any medical ramifications? I think you are grasping at straws here...straw-men that is. Angeltress: Do you know nothing about the Greeks? Ever heard of Sapphos, or the Island of Lesbos?? Wonder where the name 'lesbian' comes from? Ancient Greece! The rest of your answer doesn't even warrant a response. There are millions of gay people in the world who lead no more an 'unhealthy' life than heterosexuals. Every single 'argument' you suggested has been refuted by people who actually study human sexuality rather than dismiss it because they think it's 'gross.' I hope you never have a gay kid because you will certainly be a harm to them. You also seem a little wound up for someone who doesn't 'care' about it. Even a lot of people who disagree with it don't get as emotional as you. I think you have some repressed feelings. The fact of the matter is, it's no more 'evil' than heterosexuality. I have engaged in homosexual sex hundreds of times and never had any harm from it, nor do I know anyone who has. Angeltress: You haven't cleared up anything other than you do not really have any anthropological understanding whatsoever of human sexuality and cannot objectively defend your position. You just keep inserting attitude, sarcasm and half baked truths and think it somehow constitutes a valid argument as to why a gender preference is intrinsically evil. A gender preference! I could argue that heterosexuality is 'evil' because it belittles woman and has done since the beginning of time. I mean really, shouldn't we have evolved past that? Can you honestly not see how ridiculous you sound? edit: You do know there are multiple ways to contract staph, right? One of the primary causes is wrestling mats, and I'm pretty sure most wrestlers are not gay. I don't see how you can say 'gays' are a carrier of such a disease when they probably do not carry it any more than heterosexuals do. I don't see why *you* are worried anyway, it's not like gay people are going to have sex with you and put you at risk. Anyway, I can't be bothered to argue with you any more, it's going nowhere. I don't see why I should have to justify myself to you. Sorry about your friend but if you really want any sympathy perhaps you should work on the patronizing tone in your post. It's kind of sick you would hijack a tragedy, the death of another human being, to speak down to someone.

It is un-natural. Would you codone sex between a human and an animal? I hope not...I think it is un-natural. If a man really wants to marry a donkey, and insist that their "love" for each other is really "true and great", what do you say? I for one will laugh to death. Homosexulaity is evil because God said so. Gay persons and straight people are sinners and under influence of Devil and the World at large. Christian condemns homosexuality (the idea and behaviour, but can't condemn people, only God can). Only God can forgive. People who wants to commit homosexuality is their choice, but they are warned and will be judge by God. Whether you believe it or not, judgement by God is real and severe. Not realizing (despite you have been told) what REALLY is going on in this World doesn't mean the End time doesn't exist. Human are responsible for their wills and behavior.

It's not evil--and the Bible does not say it's evil either. What it does say in Leviticus (I can't remember which verse) is that it's a abomination for one man to lie with another as he does a woman, a phrase which in itself does not condemn all homosexual acts. Some believe the prohibition applies to anal intercourse, which is unnatural and gross no matter who does it (man-man or man-woman).
God loves everyone, and expects us to love one another. While I don't find homosexuality to be natural--and the "fact" that it's found in other animal species does NOT make it natural--we all have the God-given right to live as we want, and to love who we choose.

Evil, well thats a bit strong. Wrong? YOU BET. Two consenting adults sometimes do things in the privacy of their own bedrooms that is their business, and theirs alone. Right, wrong, evil or not,
it should be a mute point, because they are doing their deed in privacy. The problem is when they take what should have been left in private, and drag it out for everyone to see it. Blah. I dont
want to see it, or hear about it. Today I heard that the biggest jewelry fad out there is the "circle of life" pendants. Well, when a women does a women, or a man does a man, kiss the circle of life goodbye. Thats the plain truth, anyway you wanna cut it.
So, with that truth, its obvious that it is contrary to the way nature has things set up. Homosexuals should have every right everyone else has: they should be given moral support and financial support as needed to receive the medial treatment and psycological services and counciling as needed to correct their
problem. Just because a whole bunch of people have this mental/physical condition, does not mean the rest of us should call it normal and just change the way everything is done. My neighbor has a breathing problem and uses a large oxygen tank.
Perhaps the rest of us should also pull around an oxygen tank, after all, why should she feel like there is something wrong with her? Lets pretend its a normal condition, and all carry around one of those tanks - wouldn't that be more politically correct?
No, its crazy. And i don't intend to call anyone evil - Thats Gods job, but don't ask me to walk around acting like one man's penis in another mans mouth is perfectly normal and simply a lifestyle choice. forget it. I don't give a damn how much hoot and hollering they do, if its not insync with nature, quess what! Its not natural. period.

I am not sure about 'evil'; this seems too much for the situation here. However, I think it is against the nature of human beings and the natural urge to have sex between a man and a woman for the preservation of the ind. We could be endangered if more and more people choose homosexuality.

Well, the Bible says that fornication is evil in many places throughout the New Testament. It does not specify that one form of fornication is superior to another in terms of destestability to God - whether it be fornication between a man and a woman, a man with a man, a woman with a woman, or a man or woman with a beast makes no difference. In the books of the Law given to Moses, God reveals that sexual acts with beasts is an abomination. But so is fornication and/or adultery with a family member and, yes, a man lying with a man as with a woman, all of this is listed in the Law as an abomination to God. And it was all punishable by the exact same penalty under the Law. Every situation of sexual sin that God listed as an abomination, it was required by the Law that the people of Israel stone the participants to death.
In the New Testament, homosexuality is only addressed one time and only in the context of those who knew God yet did not glorify Him as God. Christians tend to focus on the homosexuality as the evil, but, in actuality, if you take all of Romans 1:18-32 in context, the homosexuality was just a result of the depravity that was already so at work in certain people that it left God with no other recourse but to turn them over to the burning of their own lusts - and homosexual behavior was part of the result.
Other than that, I see no other reference to homosexuality in the New Testament. If I missed something somewhere else in the New Testament about it, I'm happy to stand corrected. Fornication is addressed numerous times - especially throughout the epistles - and fornication is fornication is fornication no matter whether it's same-sex fornication or opposite sex fornication.
Whether we're choosing to go by the Old Testament or the New, if we're just going to pick and choose who is more evil in the whole scheme of fornication and single out homosexuality as more evil, then we're just letting our flag of ignorance fly high n' proud, then, aren't we?

It is stated in the Christian Bible that it is an abomination to the Lord, but there were many reasons for this. At that time, people were practicing sodomy on eunuchs, etc. (Which was another terrible thing to do to a male) The Lord intended for man and woman to be as one. I also believe that the Lord loves homosexuals as well. I don't judge because it is not my place to. You are not evil, just doing something that we as Christians are taught is a sin. To me, evil is Satanic and I would not call you evil unless you worshipped satan (whose name I always write little instead of with capitals). The Bible also states that there is redemption. I also would never say you are going to hell because I am not God and I highly object to people who consider themselves so superior that they have the right to even state that someone is going to hell. That is one of the things that turns people off of Christianity. Please forgive people who judge, I know I have to. I am a Christian but I am not without sin. No one has the right to tell me I am going to hell but my Savior.

You described animals as having these characteristics, why should humans be called humans if nothing distinguishes them from animals. God has created a legitimate way of satisfying desires. He created man and woman for each other. The only way to have a living and continuing family is the relationship of a husband and wife. If there is only homosexuality what would happen to the world as a whole? There would be no concept of a family. The West has already mostly done away with the "family system".
If two CONSENTING adults decided to do something bad to you, you would curse them and you would want to punish them.
By this analogy I mean to say that these consenting adults transgress against God, so think how God, the Most Merciful has even told what He dislikes, so that people could succeed in their lives.
Allah says in the Qur'an:
Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing (all limits)! They said: "If thou desist not, O Lut! thou wilt assuredly be cast out!" He said: "I do detest your doings:" "O my Lord! deliver me and my family from such things as they do!" So We delivered him and his family,- all Except an old woman who lingered behind. But the rest We destroyed utterly. We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)! Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful." (Qur'an 26:165-175)
