If you ask me its all just a load of bolloks.
Fair enough if people whant to believe what they want about god or where they/the earth came from then let them - but organised religion is the cause of just about every piece of trouble on this earth.

Is it really worth all the pain just because one lot of people believe something different than another lot?

It's like I believe in aliens but I wouldn't kill somebody just because they didn't believe in them so why does it all change when it comes to god?

Banning things just makes them more interesting! And, sorry, but free speech really is important. Various countries have tried to ban relgion, and it just does not work - forbidden fruit and all that. The answer is education, and in some small part I think Yahoo Answers is helping to educate people about the absurdities and dangers of religion.

Go ahead and ban religion....it doesn't matter...Religion is just religion, it doesn't change the fact that people are or are not saved. God didn't make religion, people made religion. There are saved people from all different religions. Whether religion is banned or not it makes no difference. Banning religion isn't the same as banning church, banning Christianity, banning believing in God. Ban religion and I will still be a Saved Christian and I was raised Baptist and will remain Baptist....Banning religion is just words, people wouldn't follow that rule just like everyone on earth doesn't follow all the rules, or laws....Why is it okay to ban people from saying "One Nation Under God" in the Pledge of Allegience????? But it's okay to get away with murder, or rape. There are a lot of more important things for people who don't believe in God to be worrying about than trying to get religion banned, taking God's name off money or out of the Pledge of Allegience...instead they should be concerned with learning God's word, Getting Saved, Stopping people from commiting murder, etc........If people who are so concerned about God's name not being used, don't like the way things are and the way things have been since the beginning of time, ignore it. It's the same as not liking a certain candy bar....Would you tell the Government to ban that company from making that candy bar just because you don't like it???? When there are other people in this world that love it. Everyone can't be pleased.......If that was the case this world would be perfect, and lets face it, its NOT. Get OVER IT!!!!!

Religion itself is not a bad thing but rather the different interpretations by different groups of what are generally referred to as Scriptures. Religion, any religion, has the same basic message: ' Be nice to each other', which can't be a bad thing?
I personally don't believe in an Omnipotet Being that created Heaven and Hell and all things inbetween but if someone wants to believe that then fair enough.
Being different to each other (or being different to other groups of people) is a cornerstone of Human existance, both religion and science are the same in this.
At the end of the day we live our lives by sets of rules, which set you live by is entirely up to you, and really we shouldn't be bothered if someone lives by a different set of rules. So ban religion? it's been tried over and over and over again and just won't work, what happens if you tell a child NOT to do something....?

History of Religion 101......

Centuries ago leaders back to primitive times used spiritual tribal men (witch doctors etc.) as a way to control the rest of the tribe. They had fears of the unknown that the great tribal leader had to give them answers for in order to prove his greatness and justify his "right" to lead. Centuries later a fellow by the name of Constantine II saw the advantages of having people believe in these things. Religion is a great motivator for getting people to wage war on others. (Even their own kind) That is how he gained the title as Emperor of Rome. He used the Christian followers to swell the ranks of his army and defeat his opponent (rival) for the throne.

The reason that it would be so hard to ban, is because Governments or those in power NEED it as a motivator. It's easier to get people to march to death in a battle if they believe that they'll get a reward or if there is a life after death.

Religion causes so much trouble, obviously. But to ban something is to impose a ruling or judgement on people's behaviour. Sound familiar?
Ultimately, I believe religion is not the cause of this trouble, merely the means. It is human judgement and intolerance that actually precipitates trouble. Religious belief is just our favourite thing to fall out over.
Judge not, a wise man said. He also said nothing about starting any kind of fucked up cult in his name.

Trust me, when it was all said and done it would be filed away in the "Worst Ideas EVER!" folder. Religion isn't the cause of most of this world troubles. People are. Religion is just the oldest amongst many fronts that people hide their own agendas behind.

Also, all religion isn't bad. Look up the number of wars that have been fought in the name of Buddha.

People are the cause of "every piece of trouble on earth". Let's ban believing in aliens too. Look at those poor Heaven's Gate people that commited suicide waiting for the aliens.

Although I am an atheist, I don't support "banning" of religions, any more than banning of books. I do support freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I believe in education as the way to end delusional religious thinking.

(Maybe put them in zoos as a curiosity for future generations, but not outright banning.)

EDIT
KENNY P. You make the totally false assumption that without religion there would be no morals. Basically you are saying, that if YOU PERSONALLY weren't terrified of being punished by your vengeful god, YOU PERSONALLY would be running amok, killing and raping. I feel sad for you.

its been tried in a lot of places in the world, time and fighting the systems in court have had the bans removed. if you believe in freedom, then the right to believe and live the way you want is one of those rights. the Chinese government to this day in prisions many because of the religious believes. the province of Quebec and Canada banned Jehovah witnesses for a time, but the courts of Canada later ruled it illegal, freedom gives us all the right to believe what we want to believe, to live as we wish and do as we wish. but you might find it interesting to know that the united nations in its character , has accepted that religion should not be a part of any government, or should it be free from taxes as it is now in so many countries.

It is all about power and greed and control. Government leaders use religion to control people.
Religion uses people to get rich and further their power and control. They also get the people to go along with the governments.
Say a young man is told that this life is all there is? Is he likely to strap on a bomb and go blow someone up if you tell him to?
What if you tell him this life is bad and the future you have 70 virgins waiting for you in this blissful place of plenty just waiting for you to satisfy their every desire. So do the right thing with God and blow up the infidels and go to heaven to met your wives.
He says give me the bomb? They are not above using religion to further their goals of taking over the world. This clerics are not the ones dieing. It is the poor young boys who believe them.
