Why would you want him to pee standing up? I have 4 boys, and the last 3 are all in a row (4,3,2) but the oldest is nearly 9 and it was just me and him (daddy works alot) for those first few years and he learned to pee sitting down. My bathroom never smelled of pee and we didn't have pee pee shirt issues (when they don't lift their shirts up highenough and get pee on them). Now that i've got all but the last boy out of diapers, and the middles (the 4 and 3 year olds) are peeing standing up, boy does that bathroom smell. I mean REALLY I have to clean it every 3 days because the urine smell from all their misses in the toilet! BTW, your 19 month old is WANTING to potty train or are YOU wanting him too?? I can tell you that w/ boys, starting too early can be a big mistake. IMO it's better to wait until they bring it up "i'm not a baby, I don't want a diaper" for example. Also better to wait until they are good and dry at nights so once they are a "big boy" during the day they are a "big boy" at night. Good luck.

I've potty trained 4 boys while being a stay at home mom and never have I tried to teach a 19 month old to pee standing up. They do not have any concept of aim at that age.
Teach him the potty training basics while he sits down. This way if he poops he's not going to trash your bathroom. Then after he's comfortable telling the different feelings between the two and he has better aim (around age 3 would be my guess) then have him stand up. You can then use words to explain the concepts of aiming (and of putting the toilet seat up and down)
Good luck with everything.

well i have a 4yr old and i taught him to pee sitting down first, just until he got the whole pee-pee in the toilet thing! it took a while then little by little i would take him to the bathroom and just stand him in front of the toilet and showed him how to aim ( this helps if u have another male figure around too) at least ur brother, uncle, or cousin- so that they can do a demo. sounds crazy but it's a part of manhood, and only a man can show a boy how to be a man. so good luck.

Do you have any other male family members who would be comfortable showing him? if not don't worry.Just take him in there stand him up to the toilet and show him.Look don't worry about the aiming thing. My oldest is six. And the Cheerios's in the world are not going to help him get it all in the toilet. That comes with time.Just stand him up so his penis is on the edge of the bowl.Or you could just teach him to sit down.Who ever said that Men HAVE to stand up when they pee.I live in a house full of them and I must say that it would make my life much easier if I had thought of this before I trained my to boys. LOL Good luck to ya.

Wow. My son wasn't even interested in the potty until he was almost 3. My husband only comes home on the weekends. I think this helped in potty training my son. He saw his daddy peeing standing up and he wanted to do everything like daddy. If at all possible, when your husband is home, let your son watch him go to the bathroom. He may want to mimic him. Good luck.
PS. Clorox wipes are wonderful for wiping the toilet down daily. My son hasn't quite grasped the concept of actually getting all of the pee in the toilet. Come to think of it, neither has my husband. LOL.

Try to find a time when he's close to peeing. Take him to the toilet, stand him facing it, pull down his pants, put your hand over his and get him to hold his penis while you cup his hand. You might have to stand there for a little bit. When he starts to pee guide his hand to make certain it gets into the toilet, being gentle but firm. You'll want to talk to him while you are doing all of this and tell him what you're doing and want him to do as part of the conversation. You're going to have to do this several times, but he should improve each time and you should have less to clean up each time. Also, try to get him to pull down his own pants before peeing instead of doing it for him, since he'll need to associate this with the process.
Be lighthearted with him when you are doing this but make certain he doesn't think it's a game or he might think it would be funny to spray it everywhere.

When I was pregnant with my first boy, all my husband could talk about was teaching him to pee like a man. Well, when he finally got down going when he sat, my husband asked him"Miachel, when are you going to pee like a big boy. You don't sit down with your pants off and pee like a mommy." Miachel came back with "well, daddy, you are a a baby cause you stand up. Mommy and me are big GIRLS! I don't be a baby like you." My husband was so mad. We saw a truck that had a picture of a cow peeing on a chicken. My husbands inner psychopath broke loose. Since we lived on 3 acres, he decided it would be okay to teach our two year old how to pee on chickens. He showed him how, but there was one problem. Now when he had to pee, he asked us to go catch a chicken. I decided to use cheerios in the toilet. He made a game out of it and decided it was better than peeing on chickens. Yep, cheerios work. I had twin girls, another boy, and one more girl, and now I am seven months pregnant with a boy. Good luck, I think I could have done it without my husband. I don't encourage you to teach your son how to pee on chickens.

standing up to pee is not a big thing...sooner or later he will see dad do it and give it a try. My son is 8 and still sits most of the time to pee. it is not a thing that has to be done ...at very latest he will see other kids when he starts school standing to pee and imitate them and want to be as they do....don't push it as long as he is using the potty

My husband was away in the military when I potty trained my son. He kept trying to take everything off and sit down like mommy. It was very frustrating, until I put Cheerios in the toilet water and had him stand there and try to sink the cheerios. It worked great, after that game it eventually became logical to him that boys have it much easier than girls do.
