As someone who sells cars there is a joke "how do you tell if a customer is lying?" Their lips are moving.
Usually people lie as a defense mechanism and we don't take it personally. For some reason, people seem to change when they walk through the doors of a car dealership. If you tend to be honest and direct, usually the same courtesy will be directed back to you.

Hmm , are you a car salesman? I always believed it was the other way around.
I think that the truth is that the concept of the evil car salesman has been told to children for a couple of generations that it has been embedded deep into our psyche.
It is a very bad story and there is probably no truth to it. I must admit that I also heard and believed that story.
As for your question, I dont think that customers lie, it is more that customers mislead you. Those are two different things.
They may say YES ! This is the car we are DEFINITELY buying. let me get the cashiers check, bank loan etc.
And then they will go to just one more dealership, find a similar car they like. then the story changes from there on.
In that dealership, the foxy salesman will say, "Heck , if you buy from me, you dont have to go to the bank and all, because with me, all you have to do is SIGN this dotted line, We will do all the banking transactions, etc "
So he closes the sale instead of you.

Car sales are force to sale cars. The lying part comes from the customer's level of knowledge and taking their decisions too soon.
