I realize that alot of people buy the generic or house brands due to economic reasons. This question is aimed towards those who voluntarily buy these lower cost brands.

What ones do you find to be acceptable substitutes for the name brand versions?

One item I will NEVER buy generic is toilet paper. Sorry, call me a spoiled American, but I must have my Charmin Ultra! lol

One item I always buy on the cheap is Walmart's version of Heinz 57 steak sauce. I also will generally take the generic version of prescription medications when given the chance.

What about you? Please share your thoughts on generic vs. name brand.

I actually prefer several of Walmart's generic products to "name brand". When we eat a box of mac and cheese, my family actually prefers the Walmart brand to Kraft! I think that in the case of medications, whether off the shelf or prescription, there is no difference in anything but the cost. Almost all canned fruits and vegetables are as good in the generic. Even the Sam's Club cola tastes great (but, I always buy Coke of Pepsi so I don't embarrass myself in front of my friends!) I'm OK with generic ketchup, but have to buy name brand mustard. In the basic type cheeses (Cheddar, Mozzarella, Monterrey Jack) as well as cream cheese, the Walmart brand is OK.

I haven't found any generic or house brand butter that I like. And, I'm with you about paper products - TP, paper towels, etc. - the generic just doesn't cut it. I also feed my dogs the "better" brands of dog food.

I've read that, in many cases, the generic product is the same exact product as the name brand; it's just sold in a different container.

aything that cant be messed up....like canned veggies (how do you mess up or alter the taste of boiled corn in a can or dry pasta in a box?) but things like tuna/ketchup/mayo and the like i will not.....paper towels i will because i use them for sanitary reasons to dry my hands while cooking and a colander would work as well for draining in a pinch if i had to....i dont clean with paper towels.....most soda i am picky about.....you are right about the walmart brands though...they dont taste much different if at all...ooh and i dont by chicken by product sandwich meat...only beef and its gotta be oscar mayer or louis rich
