Would it be grand theft auto or not? I figured if they had my car key copied they wouldn't get a charge like that. I was just wondering. It would be a shame if they were let off easy.

depends on how they got the key. if they have a key and had previous permission to use it then the charge would be unauthorized use. if you leave the keys in the car and it's stolen then it's grand theft auto and your insurance won't cover the loss and you can get a ticket for leaving the keys in it.
if they stole your keys and had one made then stole the car later then that is also grand theft auto and larceny for the keys.

It all depends on what state you live in. In Texas it depends on the value of the vehicle for it to be theft. Most of the time if an officer stops the person they would be charged with unauthrized use of a motor vehicle, but they can also be charged with theft, and that is were the value comes into play. If the vehicle is worth less than $1500 it is just a misdemeanor. If it is worth more it is a felony. In Texas UUMV "Unautherized use of a motor vehicle" it is a felony.

It would be theft. Not sure about Grand Theft Auto, if it requires something special about the car, like perhaps more than one car, but theft of property anyway.

If you didn't give them permission to take the car, then it is grand theft auto.

It is still grand theft if you never gave permission to have your key copied. If you knew they had the key it could be unlawful borrowing or joyriding. But they would go to jail for it.

They likely wouldn't be charged with anything unless they're caught stealing it or driving it. Otherwise, cops usually don't dust and have a hard time proving they stole it. Most cops won't waste their time. My advice, if you get the car back, is to take it somewhere and have different locks put in. That's what my brother had to do last week.

I believe that insurers do not consider a car 'stolen' until 6 weeks have passed as many stolen cars are found dumped with only minor damage within a fairly short time.
