Just to clarify: *I* was shocked and disgusted at it... Really, I'm okay to eat out with.

Heavens no!
This is an act of personal hygiene that should be reserved for the privacy of your own home. Men don't shave in public (normally), do they?

It is EXTREMELY distasteful when someone is trimming their nails, especially in a restaurant, with nail clippings flying potentially everywhere. Add in the fact that the hands are about the germiest part of the body, and you also have epidemiological reasons not to do this, in addition to plan common sense.

Never never never do this in any restaurant where I am a patron, please. Thank you for being considerate.

First of all, I would NOT trim my finger nails while sitting in a restaurant. It's completely GROSS and not to mention unsanitary because there is a good chance that the nail could go into someone elses food. If you think that people were grossed out by hair in their food, try putting a nail in it and see what kind of reaction you receive. It's just an unsanitary thing to do while other people are eating.

Personal hygiene should be left for the privacy of your home, or any other private place. It is very disgusting for a person to do this, specially at a restaurant. Imagine nail pieces flying all around getting into one's soup!!! Totally and utterly Gross... with a capital G....

Definitely a no. Germs gather under the fingernails, and you don't want to run the risk of introducing them into the foods being eaten at the table.

In the case that a nail has broken and needs to be tended to immediately, one should excuse themselves to the restroom to take care of the situation and to wash their hands before returning to the table.

I would say fine in the restroom or outside but not at the table. It is just rude and not to mention hygiene - you can't control where it will go so it is a no no if you have any manners.

One time I did exactly this. I trimmed my nails at a table with my friends, and maybe half were grossed out. But I dont know why, I mean, everyone has to trim their nails sometime, and I just find nothing gross about it. Its not like im shoving my nails down their back or something. But I guess we should play by the rules of socitety and etiquette. Now i know better....
....... or do I???

Any hygiene concern should take place somewhere private, especially, away from an environment like a restaurant.
It amazes me that some people are so ego-centric that they are oblivious to this basic courtesy.

Because grooming is to be accomplished in private, at home. Would you shower in public? Would you shave your legs? These things are not pleasant to watch and the others in public have not agreed to witnessing your grooming rituals. You should never do anything in public that might offend anyone.

Because it is disgusting when someone trim their nails in front of someone else.

You wouldn't because it's not the proper thing to be doing at a table around food. People don't want to be eating and then look up to see someone clipping their nails or blowing their nose. That stuff should be left for a bathroom or--better yet--at home.
