I understand how you feel. I am left with the same problem. I stare at the bottom of the door, thinking someone is there, and I hide under the covers. It takes me forever to fall asleep, and its this big event every night. I absolutely hate it, people don't understand how hard it is to have this anxiety.
I pray to God, tell him that my belief is the only thing letting me sleep. I pray the he keeps all the evil spirits and evil people away from my home and my family at night. I close my eyes really tight and pray, afterwards I feel like I made a deal to be safe, and I fall asleep easier.

Some times those child hood scares can really stick with ya ....try a "Dads away - living room camping trip" ... get the kids ...make a fort ...toast up someores in the microwave.... the next night pick a different room... repeat the process..... hopefully the feeling will subside and be easier for you ..... kinds get ya over the hump.
You could try a body pillow .. full sized to snuggle with while the hubbys away .....
Be the mom and in charge for your kids .... don't left them know your terrified to be along ... but let them know even adults get spooked from time to time.
Good Nite ! Good Sleeping!

I'm 30 too and I have the same problem. It's kinda funny though, but VERY scary at night. I mean, I'll check all the doors before I go to bed and I'm still scared. Something I've been doing for about the past week is counting. I know it sounds stupid, but I concentrate hard and count to 8 then back down to 1. I works for me. Just think of something very pleasant. Use your imagination.

Hi,
It was refreshing to read that there is other people out there like me.
I cannot sleep alone in the dark, if my partner is there, I feel safe with him and I can sleep with the lights off, when he is not there or working nights.. I am a mess. I keep the room lights on, I check under the bed a million times and I find myself tossing and turning and normally fallin sleep at 7 am when the sun starts to come up, which leaves me very little time to sleep before work.
I found myself arguing with him on nights where he wanted to saty up late becuase I sleep well in the dark but only if he is there so I need him to be there so I can have a good night sleep.
My fears come from dreams and life expereinces that have led me to this fear. Not sure what yours are from.
As a child my parents tried everything. I went to therapy, I had hypnosis, the even came up with moster spray that was just sole glad spray that they told me killed all the mosters before bed, I tried having a radio on for comfort, tried the TV too but ended up only being able to watch the cartoon channel for fear of scary tv commericals or programs that would keep me up longer.
So where does that leave me? Whats my advice.
Well I am on a waiting list to get in to see a Doctor in my area that deals with specifi phobias. This Dotocot works with people with night terrors, or fear of the dark and many otehr insonmia problems, I suggest you try and see if there is one in your area, My family Doctor called many therapists before this suggestion came up and I have great hopes.
Another suggestion was through a Natural medicine Doctor, who suggested BACH flowers, which you can research online, these BACH flowers seem to have different healing purposes and you drink them, there is a certain flower think its called ASPEN that helps relax you before bed and there is actaully a remedy to drink if you wake up terrified, that is what I am trying next, they sell this at any local health store, its actually quite common
Other that than I have purcahsed emergency lights in my room that go on when the power goes off, they are shaped like candles so I can walk and carry them around the house.
I always make sure I keep my cell phone handy in case of emergency
If I think of any other survival tatctics I will let you know
Hope that helps.

You might want to go and talk to someone to see why you're like that. But if you don't feel like it, sleep with some type of weapon i.e. knife, scissors or something sharp. My friend does that just to be ready in case an intruder comes in. Don't get nervous about that, but it does help. Have the phone ready to make a call, but only if it's truly necessary.

Have you ever had dreams that you were sexually abused as a child.
I was about 35 and going through therapy with my teenage daughter and memories began to flood in my mind about my own abuse by my Grandpa. I still have problems, but deal with it everyday because I now know that I cannot be harmed by this person again.
Just a thought!

Sounds like you may need some therapy. I would seek out a professional Physiologist to help you. Don't be embarrassed, we all have issues.
