If you do not have a photo ID (such as a drivers liscense), all you need is 2 forms of non-photo ID, but must be government issued. A birth certificate, Social Security Card, Voter Registration Card, Hunting/Fishing Liscense....anything issued by the governement, even an expired ID or passport as long as you have a 2nd form of non-expired ID will suffice.
Don't go to one of those places that advertises "Photo ID's", they are not legal forms of Identication and will not be accepted for air travel. Unfortunately you can not check in with out one of these forms of ID. Most states issue ID's while you wait, im not sure about New York, but go to the DMV and see what they offer, either a temporary ID of some kind or get a new one.
**The birth certificate must be original with a raised seal. Photo Copies of a legal document are illegal**

Go to your state's DMV and they will give you a photo ID.... if you explain the problem they will probably be able to expedite things.
And Walgreens can NOT give you an acceptable ID to get on a plane. What Walgreens probably did for that woman's husband is they can take your photo for your passport, for which you need to provide your own photo. However for an ID through the DMV they will take your photo. You need a government-issued ID to board a plane and Walgreens is not a government agency, unfortunately.
