i'd also like to add that it was given to me by a friend in the Navy, it seems older because it has a wood grip and has what it looks to be a bird or flags with an "N" underneath it on both sides.Says "Made in Germany" "Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/Co. P38Cal 9mm.Has the number 75 alongside what looks to be antler horns? Also has the Interarms Alexandria/Virginia stamp on it. Can anyone tell me about these symbols?

GEEZ WHERE DO SOME OF THESE NO NUTHIN IDIOTS FIND THE TIME TO SIT ON THIS CATEGORY WHEN THEY SHOULD BE IN A SEWING BEE OR AT WORK FLIPPING BURGERS

THE P-38 WAS ADOPTED BY THE GERMAN MILITARY AS WAS THE P-08 BEFORE IT
THERE WERE SEVERAL VARIATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS OVER THE YEARS
THE MAIN THING TO REMEMBER IN VALUING A GERMAN GUN IS THE FINE RECORDS KEEPING THE GERMANS ARE FAMOUS FOR
THE VALUE OF THE FIREARM MAY BE DISCOVERED THROUGH A THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE MARKINGS OR PROOFS THAT APPEAR ON THE GUN
WEAPONS OF THE SAME TYPE MAY HAVE DIFFERENT VALUES DEPENDING ON TO WHOM THE GUN WAS ISSUED
FOR INSTANCE IF IT WERE A POSTAL WORKER IT WOULD NOT HAVE THE SAME VALUE AS A HIGH RANKING MILITARY OFFICER
ONE THAT WAS ISSUED TO A NAZI SECRET SERVICEMAN GUARDING HITLER HIMSELF WOULD BE OF EVEN GREATER VALUE
THE PROOF MARKINGS ON THE WEAPON WILL TELL A STORY OF WHEN AND WHERE IT WAS MADE AS WELL AS TO WHAT LEVEL OF INDIVIDUAL IT WAS ISSUED
THERE ARE BOOKS ON GERMAN PROOF MARKS THAT YOU MAY READ UP ON OR FIND SOMEONE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE TO APPRAISE THE GUN
SOME OF THESE GUNS WERE POST WAR PRODUCTIONS ISSUED TO THE GENERAL POPULOUS
SOME NEVER SAW SERVICE BUT WERE UNCOVERED IN STORAGE WAREHOUSES DECADES LATER
THE SAME GUN COULD BE WORTH $350 OR THOUSANDS
AND BOXES, PAPERS, HOLSTER , CLEANING KITS OR DOCUMENTATION WILL ADD TO ITS VALUE
MAY BE JUST A "SHOOTER"
MAY BE A REAL GEM
DONT MESS WITH IT TILL YOU KNOW
THANKS FOR THE QUESTION AND I HOPE THIS SENDS YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Start buy searching the web and finding out every thing you can about your P-38. If you take any firearm into a police or any other government building you go to jail. If you do not have a permit to carry a hand gun do not carry it if you do you will go to jail. Some states will allow you to transport a handgun {Not carry it} to a FFL, gunsmith or shooting range check the law in your state and fallow it to the letter and then some. Not all states have law that requires you to register firearm or any way to do it. The P038 were made in Germany and used in WWII, the only way one could consider it an “ It's an American treasure” was if it ended up being a very valuable one and then it is iffy. What ever you do BEFORE you shoot it have a gun smith or FFL that is familiar with P-38 look at it to make sure it is safe to shoot. As for the value you are looking at less then $500.00 but it could be more if it was used in WWII.

Ignore the idiots about the police.
First of all, you should register the weapon.
That's only common sense.
Second, find a reputable gunsmith in your area and have him check it out in your presence, don't leave the weapon unless you have detailed notarized pictures of it and don't let him take it out of your sight, just in case. Better to be safe than sorry.
It appears that several manufacturers made them and the price is dependent on who made it and when.
Also, of course, the overall condition is important too.
Check my yahoo answers profile and drop me a message about what you find out about it.

Hang on to it, it's a collector gun. I don't know how much, but it's more than a new gun, especially if it's a Walther P38 !!!!!
