No it is not acceptable - that must be about 14 units of alcohol a night - more like what we should be drinking in a week. I think if someone drinks because they are lonely and turn to drink that they have a problem.

Acceptable?? That is all in the eyes of the family members and friends. But if he/she is drinking that much because he is lonely that he/she has a problem. I know of some people who just drink it because they like the taste.. but even then they don't drink half a bottle, maybe a shot, two, three max a day. I heard about some people who go thru a bottle of jack a day.. Even at half a bottle they will need profesional help just to go a week without the alcohol. It can become a deadly withdrawl.. just ask Dr G medical examiner!

First of all, drinking any amount of alcohol, every day (or evening for that matter) seems to denote a habit having formed, which indicates a possible addiction and hence, alcoholism.

Turning to "the drink" to alleviate emotional problems is usually how people get hooked on it in the first place. And 13 ounces (half a medium bottle) of whiskey or scotch is a bit much. We should keep in mind that Alcoholic beverages are considered bu our body as poison and that the liver gets a beating every time we imbibe.

Re: Question #1:

According to the Department of Health men should not drink more than three to four units of alcohol a day, and women should drink no more than two to three. These benchmarks apply whether you drink every day, once or twice a week, or occasionally.

It also recommends people avoid alcohol for 48 hours after an episode of drunkenness to give their bodies time to recover.

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is how much alcohol is present in the blood. It is described in milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

A pint of ordinary (4%) strength lager - 2.3 units
A pint of strong lager - 3 units
A standard 175ml glass of red or white wine - around 2 units
A large 250ml glass of red or white wine - around 3 units
A small (25ml) measure of spirits -1 unit
A 275ml bottled alcopop - 1.5 units

Re: question #2

Yes, it is normal to feel lonely, that is an emotion that you can feel even if you're surrounded by people. Is it normal to turn to drink BECAUSE you're lonely? I would say no, it is not normal, but is it not uncommon. Loneliness might go hand-in-hand with depression, which is one of the causes of alcoholism or drinking more than is considered safe.

A half bottle of Scotch every night would indicate a real problem. I am a Scotch drinker and I love the stuff, but I know enough to restrict my intake because I love it too much. It is a fairly normal reaction to turn to drinking when you are lonely; however, liquor makes it worse because its a depressant. I know that from experience, too.

Definitely not normal.
I am a single malt Scotch whisky fan and I only drink 1 to 2 oz per week. 3 oz. at the most. I savor the flavor and character and enjoy the night.

If you continue to drink like that, say goodbye to your liver.
I hope you or that somebody get professional help.

No it is not love. I am on my own and drink a bottle of vodka in the evening, and it is killing me slowly. Yes you feel lonely and turn to drink to deaden it all, I am on my own and have done the same thing. If you are questioning it you know it is wrong like I do. Will that do for your survey babe.

Half a bottle of Scotch is a lot.

It is normal for some people to be predisposed to deaden the pain of life with alcohol.

Scotch and whiskey are particularly hard on the body and should be approached with moderation. Kidneys bladder and liver are much affected. When you do drink it, water chasers, 2 to 1, are recommended.

It's never a good idea to drink because you're lonely.

I would say that it is not acceptable and it is not normal. And this is coming from a guy that drinks alot. Alcoholism is often associated with mental illness such as depression. But not always.
