it is a freudian term indeed, there are suppose to be (and its propably true too) anal and oral (and propably some more) retentions or fixations. a baby gets through oral and later through anal phases when its growing up, and if some kind of problems or disfunktions in his body or in the relationship with his parents appear at this stages this person will develop the corresponding fixation. its only an element of someones personality, there are many more factors that shape someone. oversimplyfied thats more or less it. allthough that is what the word has come to mean, tidy and organised is often a characteristic of anal personalities, but not always. what is the most defining characteristic is that they have a strong fear of loss, they over-negotiate everything, they invest slowly in things and people and are pretty firm in their relationships.

It comes from Sigmund Freud's theory. He was a famous Austrian psychiatrist.
His theory of human development was that every child goes through different stages in life. First is the oral stage (up until about 1.5 years of age), then the anal stage, when the child is potty trained (up until about 3.5 years of age), then the phallic stage (up until 6 years of age), when the child is interested in the genitalia, then comes the latency stage (up until 12 years old), when the child is not interested in genitals anymore but on studies, play, friends, etc., and the last stage is the genital one (starting around 12), when the interest is on starting a relashionship (usually) with the opposite sex.
Some people get "fixated" on a certain stage, so some people are fixated on the "anal" stage, which gives them certain personality traits, like the ones you describe.
The theory is lengthy and complicated, but I hope you understood at least the basics.
Oh, and of course, anal comes from "anus".

I believe that this is a contraction of the phrase 'anally retentive'. :) It's used to describe someone who, as you say, is overly fastidious in their cleaning and tidying habits and personal hygine, prim and proper self conduct, never a hair out of place, would never say the 'wrong' thing... The list goes on, you get the idea. I guess it came about by humourously taking the personal habits of these kinds of people to the extreme with the idea that they are so prim and proper and clean that they don't even go to the toilet... if you know what I mean.

I think we only started using it in Aus because the Yanks started casually throwing it about - and yes, it is related to the humble anus. It comes from Sigmund Freud, who used terms like 'anal-retentive' (the abbreviated form of what you're talking about) and 'anal-expulsive' to describe human behaviour in relation to body functions as a focus. The anal-retentive are in need of control of their environment and need to 'hold things in' as it were, while the anal-expulsive are the slobs, like me. :)

It's probable to spend lots of time and income searching for approaches to teach your children how to read and boost their studying skills. Is hard to teach a tiny child how to see, and also attractive them to read is a challenge in itself. Nonetheless it doesn't need to be that way as you got the help of this system https://tr.im/PXKX5 , Children Learning Reading program.
