I have the opportunity to take over payments on a car. Since the title is not in my name, how can I get auto insurance for this car until the title is transferred into my name? I'd heard there is a form that the owner can sign that verifies that I will be the only one driving this vehicle. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Technically, you can't. If you don't own it, you have no insurable interest in it. There are lots of people out there who do it, and get away with it. However, once your company finds out you are not the owner they will cancel your vehicle off the policy, or cancel your policy. The insurance on the vehicle now may not even cover you because if you were given the keys and started making payments on the vehicle legally that meets the definition of transfer of ownership, and the car is no longer that person's vehicle. You should get this title/registration issue taken care of asap so you can honestly be insuring the vehicle when you do.

It will depend upon your insurance company's guidelines. If the vehicle isn't registered to you, some companies will not add it to a policy in your name. Also, whatever company your father is financing the vehicle through may require your name to know that you're the driver. Make sure he checks with them first because they may not accept proof of insurance in your name only. I'm sorry this is not a simple answer. Unfortunately, it can be a process just depending upon both companies' requirements. I hope this helps!

You could always ask the person that owns it to get coverage for any driver and you will pay the difference.
