does anyone have experience when you have to go more than 100 miles from your MTF to get treatment?

I have to go to San Deigo for an appt - Yuma doesn't have what I need.

The unit is being very generous and paying for gas, hotel, and I think hubby's meals.

My meals will have (well- maybe gas too?) will be reimbursed by tri-care.

How does this work?

I don't want to go to the clinic as they violated hippa laws.

Going to UCSD. Balboa has too much to handle with Active Duty people.

If stupid tricare would pay providers more than medicade/care - this wouldn't happen anyway! Ugh. sometimes tricare is pain.

Our daughter had to go out of the area for medical care too. We had to drive almost 8 hours. Anyways, I don't know about paying or reimbursed for your expenses. They will pay for your hubby, since he's the military member. Granted, things could have changed since this was 8 years ago. He got TDY orders (no need to take leave) for where our daughter had the surgery. They paid for his meals, all the gas and the hotel. I didn't get anything at all in reimbursement. When we got our pay back, it had a breakdown of what was paid from each receipt. They had only paid for him. Her surgery was actually at another better equipped medical facility, so there was nothing to pay for her.

As I said, that was 8 years ago, but that's how it worked for us. It took them as long as any other TDY to get his money back.

EDIT: TriCare really can be a pain. I'm sorry you have to go through all this. Things change constantly and there's really no way to keep up with it all. Sometimes, I'm grateful when I don't have to get medical care on post though. Talk about a hassle and care that isn't always that good. Good luck in this whole process. I've added a link for UCSD, although I'm sure you have most of this info. There's alot of info there and lodging links.

The facility you are going to should file all the paperwork for you. You shouldn't have to pay out of pocket at all. If for some really odd reason you have topay up-front, send ALL your receipts to Tri-care and they will send you a check in about 4 weeks. Tricare will not reimburse you for gas (or not that I've heard). I had to go to clinic 150 miles from my home and was not reimbursed for gas. Good Luck. Just make sure to make copies of everything. Tri-Care LOVES to lose paperwork.

Balboa should take care of everything for you. YOU will have meals covered by Tricare, but if gas is being covered by the command, you will not be reimbursed.

I have been MEDEVAC'd several times, although I went from Japan to Tripler AMC in Honolulu. all of my transportation costs were taken care of, Lodging and meals. But I went alone(DH was deployed, of course)

There isn't a Lodge at Balboa itself, BUT there is a Fisher House

Number one... your getting your medical care for free....... plus they are paying for your trip on top of that....
If you don't like the way the program is handled you have the choice of taking out medical insurance on your own.
I don't like some of the procedures I have to follow either but I certainly don't kick a gift horse in the mouth.
