I can't remember just when my son started having tears when crying but I do remember he didn't have any when he was a small baby.

By the way, tear ducts do not make tears but are only little "gutters" that bring the tears into the nose/throat area (that's why your nose runs when crying).

Babies start to experiment with noise and the making of it at this age. There just trying to make some sounds for the first time, dont go and pick them up streight away its ok to let them cry a bit at this age.

If you are realy worried then see your health visitor at the next check up or before. Dont sit and worry about it. Thats the worst thing you can do.

Good Luck!

NO this is not normal i would take your baby to your family doctor as the baby could have a blocked tear duct and that is something you do not mess around with seek advice before problem gets worse

I am not 6months old, but anyway.
I couldn't cry for years and years, didn't really think much of it, just thought it seemed appropriate in today's cold world.
My eyes started f**king up, in a sense they would close at will.
eventually after going round a variety of healthcare proffessionals, this could be due to something, about my eye film.
Check it, medically sound.
Not everyone can cry.

Don't listen to Paula T. she is probably a very nice girl but completely clueless, she has answered my questions before so believe me I know...lol, anyway. The tear ducts at this time do work when the eye needs moisture, but the reason the baby is crying is more to tell you how he or she feels. They don't have the words to be able to express their needs so they use their voices. Your baby is fine don't worry....

My six month old cries with no tears. It means she's not really crying, she just wants attention.

Often when I play with her, the crying stops and she's happy as can be. When I walk away or look away, she starts crying again... still no tears.

I don't know if this is similar to the crying you're experiencing, but it certainly makes it easy for me to tell when my daughter is faking and when she's really upset.

No it's not. At 6 months there tear ducts should be working. You need to take the baby to the pediatrician, could be clogged tear ducts.

She may have blocked tear ducts, speak to your GP who may refer her to the hospital. Usually there is a lot of nasal dicharge when the tear ducts are blocked

its crying for attention. if its hurt and cries without tears, you might want to see your dr about it. but i've known LOTS of kids that will cry and it really seems like they are crying, but no tears, its just for attention.
