Please read all of this before ansering I know it is long. Okay I really got a shock this morning. My daughter got up this morning and said she was really thirst and went to look at her tongue. she's 11. any way she came back to me and showed me her tongue and it was a bluish grey color. It was comletly covering her tongue. It was very dark ,she brushed her teeth and the color lighted up but it was still a light grey. I called healthline and they said to take her in so I took her to the hospital and they sent me to a clinic and at the clinic the doctor told me it was not a significant coplaint or at all alarming and sent us on our way . so if there is any one out there that knows about this please answer. ..........and no she didn't eat or drink anything to cause this.

I know that it is not black hairy tongue and I'v spoken to a pharmacist and a nurse at healthlink and they both said that they don't know what it would be and that she should go for blood work and neurological tests when I can get her in to see her regular doctor. I was also told that I can report the first doctor about his attitude so if any one know who I contact to do this in saskatchewan that would be a great help. They were both surprised that he didn't do any tests and that he talked to me like that. thanks everyone.

definitely go to another ER or doctor, i agree with the person who said, it sounds like the tongue is not getting enough blood flow.

Your tongue may become discolored for any of several reasons, but this is usually not a cause for concern. Some people have tongues that are fissured, or creased, more deeply or extensively than usual. Sometimes bacteria which are present in everyone's mouth, accumulate in the fissures or on the papillae. This can make your tongue appear to be black or dark brown. The discoloration may also be caused by fungal infections such as oral thrush, by smoking, or by taking antibiotics. Sometimes the papillae may become long and hair-like.

There are illnesses or allergic reactions that can cause the tongue to change colour. Get a second opinion ASAP. The colour suggests to me that her tongue isn't getting an adequate blood supply.

I agree with the other posters. You should get a second opinion. I've never heard of blue or black tongues being normal for humans.

This happened to me on numerous occasions. I finally made the link between the grey tongue and taking pepto bismol. The first time it's very alarming, and it doesn't happen every time I take it, but I only get a grey tongue if I have taken the pepto. Think back and see if she may have had stomach problems and taken it.

It could be an infection. There is an infection called black hairy tongue. It is fungal, and it tends to be black.
Go to your MD and get this tested.

Is there any chance she took Pepto-Bismol? It can make your tongue kind of black and furry-looking.
