For somebody starting out right after college in their early 20's?

I heard it was pretty cheap rent(compared to other parts of manhattan), is the area safe too?

E. Village is the place to be for recent college grads. It is probably the youngest big city neighborhood in America. And probably the lowest cost neighborhood below 110th St & outside of Chinatown.

But cheap? Judge for yourself. My son & his girlfriend live in a 5th floor studio walkup in an 80 year old building on Ave. A. (The "bathtub" is in the kitchen) They pay $1250 a month & that's 'cause they've lived there for 5 yrs under a rent stabilized lease. Newbies would pay more.

nothings cheap in NYC. Check brooklyn or Queens. Or shoot I live in the bronx and its more quiet there than when i lived in westchester. Better people too. depends on the neighborhood in the outer burroughs though. Check www.newyork.craigslist.org for a sample pf pricing in neighborhoods. You CAN score a BIG apartment a little more uptown. Washington heights or Inwood. Not great neighborhoods but I see more and more white people up there every day. Juszt gotta find a good street. one street can be way different than another.

it used to be cheap. I doubt it is anymore, from what I've seen. gentrification has been going on there for about 15 years. be prepared to pay through the nose.
