i want to become a cop but i know on the polygraph test, they'll ask you if you've ever sold drugs, i sold a nug of weed for a dollar about 3 years ago, and thats all i've ever sold in my life. Will this hurt my chances of becoming a cop?

I mean, it's been a WHOLE 3 years..

Please help here!

It won't hurt at all! Just don't lie about it. If you try to lie, you'll lose all opportunity of becoming a cop.

I worked with the department of defense for over 7 years. Worked with best agents. They all had histories like yours. Here is why not to lie about it:

Check out this link:

It teaches an officer/agent to detect a lie without a polygraph.

Here's another one:

It teaches how to read body language to detect a lie.

Most likely the officer/person that will interview you is well versed on these techniques. So just be brutally honest about your past. Be truthful!

You are not a politician running for office. To be a cop you must have good intentions and love to enforce the law. You must believe in the laws and not break them yourself.

My suggestion would be go to your junior college and take Criminal Justice classes, maybe even get that 2 year degree. The local police forces are looking for those with degrees. And unless this is something new I have never heard of getting a poly except for the FBI and CIA.
You will however take a physical (run, situps, chin ups etc) test, written test, and oral exam (during the oral they will throw questions at you and try to trip you up). All it takes is preparation. Study, study study.
Go to the library and get the testing booklet for Police Officer and study it, get in shape, and practise public speaking for the oral.

We need good cops who are honest, hard working, and believe fully in protecting the public and in the laws they govern.

Good Luck

Your life is over, especially now that you already admited to it on the internet. I bet there is 20 federal agents ready to break down your door within the next 15 minutes. Seriously though if you want to be a cop I have a lot of respect for that. It's is a thankless job that is dangerous and pays very little. Someone has to do it though and to those that do I respect them.

Ive been through the poly thing when I was a corrections officer. The best thing is be honest up front. They should ask you some questions up front just be honest. That way you dont mess up the poly and you arent trying to hide anything.
For something that small I dont see why it would hurt you. Ive seen some who have done worse and are great officers today.

Did you get caught? Any charges? Polygraphs are not allowed in court by virute of being unreliable...how can they ask on a job interview? Remember it is either a yes or no answer test...no room to explain anything. So whether you say yes or no...you were never charged and they can't prove it.

No, no, no...you've got it all backward. You're supposed to become a cop and THEN become a criminal. That's the way it's usually done.

Well I think it might destroy your chances of becoming a cop cuz they dont allow you to explain the situation. Its either "yes" or "no". But I think you should still take the test, good luck to ya!

Don't worry, as a cop you'll be selling lots of drugs, stealling lots of drugs, beating on innocent people, etc. You know, normal punk police things. Good luck pig!

I was friends with a future cop in college who did weed. He became a cop in Chicago...then he quit though cos he didn't like it.
So I think you'll be alright.

you're assuming that that one little lie will definitely be detected.
Search passing a polygraph instead. I passed with the weed question. You just have to learn how to control your reactions.
