Apart from gifts that are wrapped give them 12 wishes - for the 12 days of christmas - and grant them one each month till the following xmas.
You will be amazed at what they will ask for
Not everyone will ask for a car or something expensive
but
they may ask you to do or not do something that is personal, so...

I would give him something sport related, he's a big Leafs fan so I'll start there.. get things he mentions .. maybe he's to 'cheap' to buy it for himself.. ask questions without being to obvious since tis' the season is coming up and all..

well my husband loves golf, he loves music and plays a guitar, so what i tend to do is wait for him to say that he needs a new golf club or something for his guitar, then i go out and get it, so use your partners hobby as a guide to what he wants, mine is always going on tha theres a new 9 iron that he wants or a new golf bag that he's seen, so before he goes out and gets it, i get it first
