I think an ideal solution would be to get Mexico to handle the illegal immigration problem. If the Mexican government would make that effort, or if the Mexican people would use their combined willingness to take physical risks to better their lot within their borders, the fence wouldn't even be under discusssion. Plainly, however, that is not going to happen, and so the illegal immigration into the US issue, after decades of limbo, has finally come to a head.
The fence will seriously slow the number of illegals crossing over, and will give those patrolling the border a better chance at catching those who must climb it to get in to this country. And no, shooting them is not the answer, any more than is your flippancy and hatred. They have to be turned around, consistently, and sent back. Sadly, if we are to gain control of this situation, we have no choice but to utilize effective means to do that.
This fence reminds me of the Berlin wall in many ways. Most importantly, after years of inability to escape oppressive government, people demanded and got change. The wall came down.
I'm afraid Mexico may have to suffer through a similar 'pressure cooker' era. For a long time, the US has been a pressure relief valve for Mexico. End that, and Mexico's people will have no choice but to effect change from within.

IMHO if they weren't hired they wouldn't come. A fence is not going to stop them as long as there are jobs available for them. The need is to go after the folks hiring them illegally. That and Mexico needs to get a grip on their own country instead of relying on the American dollar. For those that don't know, the illegals come here, pack as many folks into one home as they can to share the rent, make tax free dollars and send it back home where it increases in value helping to build up a nice nest egg, getting free medical, education and other resources that you and I pay for while they are here, work a few years unlike the 20,30 or 40 years you and I do, then go home to enjoy the fruits of their tax free labor. A freakin fence is not gonna stop that.

The fence is a ridiculous idea and a waste of money. Whatever you think of the "crossers", they are people with enough initiative and motivation to find their way around any fence.
Most of the illegal aliens in this country didn't cross the border illegally anyway. They arrived here on tourist or student visas, and then simply didn't leave.

The fence will become just another political ploy to distract Americans from how little is really being done about this problem. Now if we electrified the structure w/ adequate voltage and sold tickets to watch, the funds might help pay for the services used up by the criminals allready here.

The fence bill is a purely political move. Bush even delayed signing so he could spread out his legislative achievements during this slow news period before the election.
No study was done showing whether the fence would be effective, or where to build it. As far as I've read, there've been no cost estimates or limits on the budget for this fence!

I think that Fence is just a waste of money and time... illegals will cross any way... just think about it, now that immigration is getting hard on ilegals, an illegal crossed the border with a Mariachi band playing!! That fence is going to make them to look for other options to cross.. such as tunnels. There is no way that they can stop illegal immigrants from coming... just accept it.

I agree...I think we should shoot them too. But I am not against the wall. If anything I think we should make the wall taller and out of concrete with watch towers every mile or so. That way the beaners can't simply climb over the fence, and they would be easier to shoot.

Build the wall and then put Bush and his cohorts behind it down south!!
After bringing down the Berlin Wall to support democracy and freedom, the leader of the Free World now wants to build a wall on his own borders to supposedly support the democracy and freedom he so strongly declare to defend. :(

The 'fence' is just like a padlock... keeps the Honest man honest.... the criminal mind has and will break in! And while we focus on the 'fence' another overcrowded prison releases more students of the criminal institutes in America onto your streets! Be warned!

I think all this talk about shooting people is childish. They are humans. We don't even shoot serious criminals, like molesters, and murderers, get real. You people that talk like that are the ones that make this country a scum bowl. Get a Life.
