This is a very good question because most people I asked did not know whether frogs sleep. So I took this question to some professionals. I talked to members of the Science Department at Clover Park High School in Lakewood, Washington. What they had to say is very interesting. Frogs don't sleep the way humans do. When we sleep we go into a dream like state. There are stages to our sleep. When we are in the deepest sleep it is referred to as REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement. If you are asking if frogs sleep the way we do, the answer is no. However, frogs do not stay up their entire lives.

Frogs go into what we call diapause. This is when their bodies and metabolism slow down for a long period time and they are inactive. An example is estivation. When the pond begins to dry up in the summer the frogs dig deep into the mud and become inactive. This is called estivation because happens in the summer. In winter when it becomes very cold ice forms on the pond. The frogs may again dig deep in the ground. When they do this in the winter this is called hibernation.
