I think its to do with a few different things, the textures of the two foods compliment each other, i suppose thats why we started eating cheese and onion sandwiches. Also cheese and wine go together and so it stands to reason that fruit would go with cheese seen as wine is made from grapes. Cheese is also very rich and so the fruit helps to balance that by bringing out the flavour and softening at the same time. Jsut had another thought...we eat fruit with cream and as cheese is a dairy product maybe dairy products just work well with fruit like a tag team! lol!

Balance and contrast are the two words that spring to mind. It's the interplay of the sweet and tangy and the creamy and mellow. The fruit's natural acidity cuts through the cheese's creamy slightly cloying taste and texture, whilst the cheese mellows the sharpness of the fruit. It's a sort of yin and yang of the dessert world!

Just like wine and cheese, you are cleaning your palate to enjoy the wine more. When you take a bit of cheese after a glass of wine, you can taste another type of wine better. I think that works the same with fruit and cheese. So, you are cleansing your palate to enjoy the fruit more.

If you notice when you eat cheese it leaves a creamy residue or feeling in your mouth, well the acidity of the fruit helps cut that and also the sweetness can enhance the flavor of a lot of cheeses. Try adding your favorite preserves or sliced fruit to a grilled cheese sandwich, yum, apricot w/Camembert, sliced aged cheddar w/apple or pear slices.

The dryness of the cheese and the juices of the fruits make a good flavour. Best mixture is very mature cheese and cox's apples.

because the acid in the fruit cleanses the palette from the cheese .this allows to taste different cheeses and appreciate the flavours without the lingering taste of the previous mouthtful

Apple, grapes, cheese, red wine and brazil and walnuts go together wonderfully on a night in. Get a treat while getting good nutrition so no need to feel so guilty.

The sweetness of the fruit is enhanced because the cheese is savoury, whilst the savoury taste of the cheese stops the sweetness tasting too sickly.

The natural sweetness of the fruit is the perfect contrast and compliment to the salty nature of most cheese.
