It's ridiculous. In the west we have self tanning "holiday" creams manufactured by the big cosmetics companies to make white skin look darker. In Asia, (ie China, Japan, far east) the very same companies sell skin whitening creams to make skin look paler - just pandering to insecure fads. Most cultures across the world historically have viewed the darker skinned of their own (whatever race) as less "worthy" because it indicated someone who did not have to work outside - light = rich and rarified. Nowadays if you get outside it means you are rich and well travelled, and also the increasing racial diversity and acceptance in our culture has all made us want what we don't have. The answer is simple - you should love your skin and be proud of it, whatever colour it is - just don't go self tan orange. that ain't good!

it's just to do with looking healthy but it's also down to the individual. have you ever seen madonna with a tan? no and she looks fab and has no wrinkles or moles or skin damage. i am pale and have never tanned but my boyfriend only looks at the sun and he's black. he always takes the mickey out of me but since i've been with him and have tried to get a tan i have noticed my skin getting more moley and freckles. this is not good so i am all for white is good - you've got to go with what god gives you or invest in lots of fake tan which doesn't really work either......so white it is..

I've never been "white" -- more like light tan and pink. If I spend more time in the sun, I get darker tan and less pink. Our culture assumes that someone with a "tan" has more leisure time to spend outdoors, which makes them seem wealthier and healthier. Not necessarily true :)

It is ironic that many cultures where people naturally have darker skin consider lighter-skinned people to be healthier and wealthier. In their case, it usually means that a person is wealthy enough not to have to do manual labor outdoors, which keeps their skin lighter. It's all just cultural biases, which may at one time have had some slight basis in reality, but these days doesn't really mean anything.

I think it was based on the notion that if you had a tan- you must have been able to afford to go to some place tropical. I recall hearing that it started when Coco Chanel was on a cruise and accidentally got a tan. Of course- being Coco, women then saw this as a fashion statement of sorts. Also, when women starting going outside and it became acceptable to wear less clothing the tan became viewed as "healthy". My skin is pale most of the year, but its hard not to believe I look better when my skin is darker because that's what I've been led to believe.

I like my white skin, I'm proud of my white skin, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Aha! Its not so much the darker skin thing than the "skin looks better when exposed to a bit of sun" My opinion is that someone who has a glowing complexion looks healthier than a transluscent pale one.

Its because not many people can just be happy with what they have and want what everyone else has. Or just because a tanned body looks more toned than a pale body!

I'm quite happy with my skin colour... white with a blue-ish tinge. (I'm Scottish!) Don't mind getting a slight tan in summer, but then its back to blueish in winter. Don't know what the current sunbed/fake tan craze is all about, there are all these orange people walking about now, its unnatural. Its funnny, in the victorian era it was fashionable to be super-pale - I would have fitted in pretty well! But now everyone seems to want to go brown all year round. Maybe people think that brown looks healthier, but I don't think its worth going on sunbeds because of the risk of getting skin cancer. But then again, I don't feel the need to slap on loads of sun cream every time I go outside either. I like to just let things happen naturally, like I said, slight tan in summer, and in winter, a whiter shade of pale.
