The memorial for a fallen cop is being held today, in my town. Main roads are closed, and flags are at half mast.

The issue is, being state employees working a block from the capitol, we had no clue about who the heck he was! Nobody understood why streets were closed this morning, traffic was delayed, and there was such a fuzz.

The state website posted a note explaining that two cops died of motor injuries (actually, one was hit by a judge!). http://www.ct.gov/mil/cwp/view.asp?a=1345&Q=314654

No heroic feats, no final battle against a felon. Just two dead cops killed in traffic accidents.

Obviously, this is costing the tax payers. Should these manifestations be reserved for well known people? Should any ordinary citizen qualify too? Should a ceremonial day like this be equally available to any other citizen, at cost only to tax payers?

And no, I have never been arrested or am a convicted felon because I am not expressing support. So, keep it rational.

Robby, keep it civil. After all, you're the rational one, right?
Post a note on cops and we can debate their civil righhts violations there instead

The streets were closed at 8:00 am, in the insurance capital. Rush hour. No warnings the day before, no news about it. Nothing related to accomplishments that granted the exceptions. I am not the only one that finds the situation particular in my state today.

I think that we shouldn't go to any extraordinary measures to "honor" the dead. If that is due them then they will be honored wherever they end up, if that is what we choose to believe in as a society.
Maybe the traffic accidents were caused by their own stupidity, who knows? Maybe they beat their wives, maybe they voted for Bush!
As a fellow resident of DC I don't appreciate all the pomp and circumstance that we must endure for the sake of honoring anyone.
All that will be decided for us, an by someone who keeps better records than we do.

Personally I think it would be disrespectful to the fallen cop and to all cops if we did NOT make special manifestations for cops killed in the line of duty. It doesn't matter if you're shot down in a bank robbery gone wrong or just have a stroke while driving your cruiser, a cop who dies doing his/her job has died in the line of duty. Just because there are no thrilling newsclips to watch does not make it any less honorable.

I think regular citizens do not warrant the same level of memorial. Some particularly outstanding ones might but every cop who dies while working (hollywood car chase or not) should be memorialized. If it were up to me, I'd make all the state employees go to the funeral, too. We ask these folks to work the most difficult job for low pay just so that we can have a safer society where people respect the rules. The least we can do is take notice when one dies doing their job.

Sorry if it inconveniences you but if you are so worried about how the traffic has impacted your commute, you might want to re-examine your priorities. To value your smooth ride into work more than you value honoring the passing of someone who protects you is pretty shallow. By the way I checked out some of the other questions you posted and they're for the most part very anti-cop. Not sure why you hate the police so much. I find that if I behave myself, and don't do anything stupid/immature/illegal I get along very well with cops. They are some of the most loyal friends I have. Not sure why you have such a bad relationship with the police though.

Well...Noteriety should not prevent a city from showing respect and loyalty to its workers. However, as the deceased did not die protecting anyone, or in an usually "heroic" fashion, then I believe the "support our troops" mentality has been taken too far. (I have two brothers in active duty, so allow me to elaborate). What I mean is, the honor reserved for fallen troops, firemen, police, etc., should be used sparingly. The reason is both cost effectiveness of shutting a city down, as well as to keep the honor revered. There is a saying: familiarity breeds contempt. Now, instead of honoring deserving people, all cops get a big funeral, shut down a city and are generally held to higher regard. However, while this used to be a two way street, in that as cops were treated well and had certain perks (free coffee, etc..) any cop who broke the law has the "book thrown at them" as they were supposed to protect the law. Today, while any cop can receive an honorable funeral, ALL COPS get handled with kid gloves inthe court system. Instead of being held as an example, a cop gets a sweat plea bargain, just because he is a cop, when common sense says throw the cop in jail longer, because of abusing his position. Of course, in my opinion, cops, firement, ems, and others should receive more pay and better perks than most city workers (for obvious reasons). However we might as well shut down all cities when city employees perish. Our motto should be: "If it makes sense, we won't do it."

Wanda your hate for cops is really starting to consume you. When the officers were alive they may have done more good for the people of your community then you know about. Instead of sitting on a computer attacking people.

Its getting really pathetic now, that because your kid had an issue with a cop that you are going to attack ones that are fallen.

they are public servants, and if they were killed while on duty, they deserve the memorial service.I can't believe you'd question the tax issue because you were inconvenienced on your way to work.
