How fun is that? Cool mom!
My grandma used to give us corn flakes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and cut up strawberries. Pretty healthy actually...considering that at some point in the day we would have had ice cream anyway.
Balanced nutrition doesn't mean you have to only have breakfast food at breakfast time.
My high school daughter is healthier and thinner than any of her peers and the few things I insist are:
--A minimum of 7.5 hours of sleep a night (and a study just came out that says sleep-deprived kids are fatter)
--Breakfast is a must. I dont' care if she eats left overs, cereal, juice and a bagel, frozen pizza, a Cliff Bar and milk. Whatever. As long as she gets a few hundred calories into her body in the moring I am fine. She is a better student for it!
--Two fresh fruits a day and two fresh vegetables. So I cut up oranges and grapefruit. I wash grapes and berries. I cut up veggies for dipping into yogurt dip and I serve at least one vegetable and usually 2-3 with dinner every night.
I know the recommendations are more that that but considering she's a Taco Bell loving teen, I think we're doing OK.
I say let your kids eat cake for breakfast once in a while and they will have fond memories of such fun breakfasts!
My sister lets her kids pick all 3 meals the day of their birthday. Last week her 6 year old decided for his birthday that they would eat Macaroni and Cheese for all 3 meals! Last month her 7 year old chose fruit parfaits with whole wheat toast for breakfast, salad for lunch and pot roast for dinner....kids are so funny
For the day after Halloween I always let my daughter eat 5 pieces of candy for breakfast as long as she had a small glass of juice or milk and one egg scrambled. Still good food but was she ever excited to get to bed Halloween night in anticipation of the next days breakfast!

There's a classic Bill Cosby routine about this, in which he justifies feeding cake to the baby because it's made with eggs, wheat, and milk -- it's nutrition! Then the older siblings see that the baby's getting cake, and he has to give it to all of them... and then Mom comes downstairs and all hell breaks loose. It's a favorite in our household.
Anyway, nevermind having cake WITH breakfast -- my son had cake FOR breakfast yesterday, including frosting ("Fudge Elegance" cake, to be precise), but that's because it was left over from his birthday the night before. He had a big glass of milk with it to give him some protein to get through the day till lunch.
Moderation is really the key here -- the morning after your birthday, cake is a Fine Thing to have with (or for) breakfast. And around this time of year, the bakery in our local grocery store makes a really fine pumpkin bread (which, let's face it, is really cake), and sometimes we'll bring home a loaf of pumpkin bread to share on a crisp autumn morning.
But having cake every day could get to be a problem -- though it would be interesting to compare the amount of sugar in a slice of your cake without frosting to a couple bowls of Fruit Loops or Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. I'm not sure which one would be the most sugary...

i was an overweight child that lived on diets growing up for my health sake. But my grandmother who was my biggest help growing up knew i was a kid and should still have some fun stuff like cake. So once in awhile she would allow me cake for breakfast with the frosting along with a glass of milk. She figured if she gave it to me in the mornings i would more likely burn off the extra calories and fat during the day. And I'm glad she let me have cake that way BC now as an adult i know my weight problem is a hormone problem and with hormone therapy and exercise I'm losing weight that diet and exercise never could take off for me

With the obesity problem out there getting worse every day giving them cake even without icing should only be an occassional treat. Teaching your children that cake is a breakfast food is just a bad idea. Saying its ok because it is the same as eating muffin or cinamon bun as some suggested is a bad idea, you shouldn't be feeding your kids those things either, they are no healtier than cake.

If there is cake at my house, which isn't very often...but if we get the left over cake from a family event or something, I eat it every morning for breakfast with a glass of milk, I LOVE cake for breakfast, absolutely. and I'm not overweight, I'm 5'6 and I weigh 123...normally, I'm 4 mos pregnant now, so I weigh about 127...but, still...I dont think that's bad!! there are some really good muffin mixes, too. i worked a daycare before, and the kids loved it! they would eat it for breakfast and then would be asking for more at snack time! you'r enot doing anything wrong, unless you always feed them unhealthy and dont let them be active, kids metabolism is so high they can eat like that!

I think it's fine once a week, or on holidays or special events. As long as you don't feed them junk food for breakfast too often, and don't say 'yes' every time they ask for it. It's better than not eating breakfast at all, but you may want to add something nutritious with the cake (such as strawberries or other fruit).

What is the difference in giving them cake with frosting with a glass of milk and giving them the sugar cereals most kids eat? Your the parent. you make this decision and if you think someone will disagree with you just don't tell them!

No way! let em' live a little. My five kids won't eat cold cereal unless their at grandmas huose. I have to cook every morning. That is perfecly fine, actually, my kids ate cupcakes for lunch yesterday. Just don't make it a habbit of eating it every morning. Keep them on a "diet". If you give them cake in the morning, don't give them fatening food for lunch. My two year old daughter wouldn't drink a bottle with out coke in it, so she had that and some baby food balanced through out the day and she still only weighs 19.2#'s. Just balance out what they eat. Have fun!

No. Some mornings I wake up and see that I don't have any milk, I improvise, give her a piece of pizza with juice, and if cake is all you have. Let them eat cake. There is nothing wrong with that.
That is surely better than for them to go to school or be at home hungry, don't you all think?

Depends on the cake.
Carrot cake, yes. Chocolate cake, no.
Why not just some toast instead? My family always used dessert as a reward for being on goo behavior during the rest of the say, not as a breakfast substitute.
