My grandsons bike was left out in garden in all bad weather. The chrome on wheels is very badly rusted. My husband has been using a wire brush and wire wool but it is still bad. Can anyone help with solutions how to get this rust off or at least most of it.

Understand that neither chrome plating nor paint rusts, so the rust is forming on the steel under the finish and shows through tiny voids. If the paint or chrome has been compromised to the point where it has blistered, there is no way to make it look as though it was never rusted.

The best way I have found to remove rust before it reaches the blistering stage is to use very fine wire wool dipped in automotive paste wax, then rub briskly.

A product named CLR is good for removing rust stains. It actually stands for Calcium, Lime and Rust. It can be found in most hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot. I use it to get the calcium deposits off my shower head.

Another option would be to spray paint the chrome with chrome-colored paint. It would look like new then.

Here's the stuff Naval Jelly
http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-Naval-Jelly-Rust-Dissolver/dp/B0002JN204

Available at automotive stores as well.
I use the stuff all the time and in fact need to go to Schuck's to get more.

Then wipe clean and spray a clear coat of Rustoleum spray paint to seal and protect.

Dupont used to make chrome polish that worked well for that application. It came in a bottle as a liquid. It's a time consuming job that will leave your hands and fingers sore.
