Slow down, and try to see things from more than one point of view. Learn about the thing you think you hate. It doesn't mean you have to suddenly love or accept that thing, but you learn how to place it in its proper context and stop letting it run your ideology or life.

All the preceding are very good ways. But I must add that maybe you should think of finding some new friends who are into love and peace. It's easier to learn and keep new ways of thinking if you are in an environment that supports you. Wayne Dyer says you will become what you think about all day. It really is true. There are many books on how to change your life by changing your thoughts. Look into it.

Jesus told us the greatest thing that we can do is to love one another. He also shows us that in our own earthly thinking we can never really achieve that. The bible says God is Love. So to elevate ourself above hate as you asked we must receive the spirit of God into our lives. That comes by asking Jesus Christ to come into your life, putting your trust in Him, and turning away from bad things, and asking Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Then as in the book of Acts in the bible you will be filled with a supernatural love that is beyond comprehension and able to fully obey God. Because you've received God Himself into you. Hate then becomes the harder thing to do.

"It is a fact of life that many people are troubled by difficult emotional states in the pressured societies we live in, but do little in terms of developing skills to deal with them. Yet even when the mind goes sour it is within most people's capacity to arouse positive feelings to sweeten it. Loving-kindness is a meditation practice taught by the Buddha to develop the mental habit of selfless or altruistic love. In the Dhammapada can be found the saying: "Hatred cannot coexist with loving-kindness, and dissipates if supplanted with thoughts based on loving-kindness."

Hatred like all emotions are generated from within. Sometimes it is caused when we see our own fault in another human. Sometimes it is caused by being out of a comfort zone. Regardless of the cause the transferring our emotion to another person may help us give self worth to ourselves, to become better at accepting of our own frailties.
It may help to look within whenever you feel out of sorts. Understand when you point a finger elsewhere there are three more pointed back at you. Accept that you are not abnormal. We all feel hatred, love, hurt, disgust, and a many emotions in our lives. You are obviously on the right road to happiness, because you are aware of a desire for change. Take a simple word to heart. It is Namaste! (NAH - MAH - STAY) It means the light (or god) within me, recognizes the light in you! You can say this word to yourself whenever you feel out of sorts. It may stay your anger and help you gain understanding.
It is encouraging to know others are striving for peace. Thank you!

By realizing that hate hurts you way more than it hurts the object of your hate. It's way too draining. Don't give it your time or your life. Just move on to something else and be happier. You can't like/love everybody and everything but, one must control hate, not the other way around. That's being good to ourselves. : )

Through Jesus Christ you see when the world hated him and put him on the cross he was still loving us as he said Father please forgive them for they know not what they do. We put him there it was our sin not his that he died for and he loves us so much still only through Him can we rise above the hate and learn to LOVE.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to die on that cross for our sins if you could give your life for someone you love that would be the greatest thing that you ever done

Hear no evil, See no evil and Speak no evil.
Don't listen when people speak of wicked things. Don't watch when someone is doing something you wouldn't want your mother or grandmother to see. Don't spread rumors. Speak only truthfully of things you personally know about. Don't spread rumors no matter what and don't speak poorly of others.
