I have been wanting one for a while. I want to get it on my lower back, most likely it will just be black and tribal. I'm just a little scared about getting it? I was just woundering what I should expect.

It really depends on where you get one.

I have two, one on each ankle. They only hurt a bit while the artist is putting them on. Once the needle is off your skin, the pain stops. It's more like a abrasive feeling than actual hurting...I don't know how else to describe it. Afterwards, it doesn't hurt at all.

You may have a bit more pain where you are wanting to get one, only because your waistband of your pants may hit on it.

I'm a big weenie though, so if I can survive it twice, you can!

Good Luck.

I have two at the moment, going for my third in a month.

Two main points to consider :

LOCATION - anything tattooed where the skin is thin and bone is close to the surface will hurt more, but the pain isn't really all that bad. It might be tender for a few days, but that's part of the fun - it really let's you know you've made a life commitment!

THE ARTIST - If you're nervous or a first timer, ask the tattoo artists if they have a "heavy hand" when tattooing - some guy/gals press a little harder than others - this makes it a little more tender, but also drives the ink deeper and insures a longer lasting color for your design.

ALSO - ask other people with tattoos in the area you're considering who they went to, and how the pain factor was for them. Look for others with a similar body type to your own, and you'll have a better idea of how your body will "take" the pain.

Best of luck, hope it comes out well for you!

Lower back is one of the more painful areas for a tattoo, at least in my experience. I have one on my lower back, one on my shoulder and one on my ankle. The ankle was the least painful for me because the design I chose had very little colouring in. Both the shoulder and lower back tattoos had a lot to fill in, so they were more painful. The skin on the lower back is more sensitive because the skin is not often exposed. If you speak honestly with your artist, they will tell you what kind of tribal design is least painful to tattoo. If the one you want is intricate, then expect it to hurt. You can buy cream to numb the skin before hand, make sure you apply it 30 minutes before you get the tattoo. You can take advil or motrin as a pain killer. Don't take aspirin, you will bleed more if you do.

Ok first off, anyone that tells you their tattoo "didnt hurt" is a liar. Youve got multiple needles going into your skin, it isnt going to tickle. Just think about it. Ive got 2 tattoos so yes, I know what it feels like. Its more of a burn/stinging sensation then a direct pain, and it definitely is nothing to cry about. My suggestion to you is to start with something small and not too many details to see if you can handle it. Maybe a little heart or something somewhere. But either way, good luck and make sure you stake out the tattoo shop and are comfortable with it.

It will sting a bit more than really hurt IF you go to a good tattoo artist, most important. Make sure that YOU watch him/her open a CLEAN needle, clean and disinfect the area first. When I had mine done, just a small rose, my guy put vasoline over the area after cleaning, then the pattern I wanted and the needle glided over the area for the most part. It is NOTHING like getting a shot :) I have heard that getting one near bone can be a bit painful but everyone seems to think it's worth it. Good Luck!

I have a medium sized tattoo on my side near my ribs which is a pretty sensitive spot. When I had the outline done it didn't hurt at all, but then the coloring hurt a lot more. The pain is sort of addicting, it's not unbearable. I guess it just depends on your threshold of pain.

Well I can't tell you how bad it will hurt on your lower back. I can say that I have them on my legs and it didn't hurt too bad. I also have them on my feet (the tops) and it hurt.
Truth is that if you get a tat on a meaty part of your body it doesn't hurt as bad as per say, on bone.

I HAVE 3 TATTS. MY NAME ON MY LOWER BACK AND THEN MY INITIALS ON MY SHOULDERS. ANYWAYS THE ONLY WAY I CAN DESCRIBE IT AND I THINK ITS A GREAT DESCRIPTION; IT FEELS LIKE SOME ONE IS GIVING YOU AN INDIAN BURN/OR USING A PENCIL ERASER RUBBING HARD INTO YOUR SKIN. I WAS TERRIFIED AT FIRST CAUSE MY FRIENDS KEPT TELLING ME IT WOULD HURT. THEN AFTER I READ A PAMPLET AND IT SAID THE NEEDLE WOULD BE PRICKING ME THOUSANDS OF TIMES I FREAKED OUT AND STARTED CRYING LOL. BUT IT DIDN'T HURT. SO I SAY GO FOR IT!!

Don't do it. Just think how it'll look when you're old, saggy, and wrinkled. And if you ever want it removed it'll hurt even more. Just use the temp ones, and you can even change them around if you want. Way better solution in my opinion. Lots cheaper too. Look at these sites: www.tattoofun.com, and www.extreme-temporary-tattoos.com for alternative ideas.

Its not that bad. I was really scared too. it just feels like scratching of small fingernails (like a little kid). I have one on my upper back and the only part that hurt was when he did it on my bone. so only the center on your spine will hurt.
