Shih tzu or toy poodle? I've heard so many people say that shih tzu is a better choice for a beginner but I've read that tzu can be very stubborn and are not easy to housebreak. I've heard so many people say that toy poodles are also good for beginners and I've read that they are easy to train but are yappy. Is a toy poodle a dominant kind of dog coz I'm really not the dominant type and I don't want my dog ordering me or something like that.

There are simple obedience skills you can use to ensure that you are the "alpha dog" in your house hold regardless of what type of dog you choose to get. I think that if your dogs is kept on a consistent potty schedule this makes house training much easier. Consistency is the key. This isn't to say that you'll never come home to an accident but a regular schedule is very helpful for the dog to establish a routine! And last but not least....consider breed specific rescue! There are tons of shih tzu and toy poodle rescue sites and chances are there's a rescue group very close to you! Adult dogs are often house broken and you avoid all the unwanted puppy behavior like separation anxiety, ruined carpet, chewed doors. A tiny breed puppy can do just as much damage as a large breed puppy!

Really it doesn't matter. Six of one...

You have selected two breeds that require a LOT of grooming to keep up their coats, so learn how to do that yourself or plan on dropping a lot at the groomer's frequently. There is nothing sadder than a dog full of mats.

Housebreaking any puppy is rough, but you will be better off if you crate train and walk often. Put the pup on a schedule. What goes in on a schedule, goes out on a schedule. Plus dogs in general respond REALLY well to routine. AVOID training with puppy pads. A lot of people do this with small dogs, but they just confunse the issue. Sometimes the dog CAN pee in the house, sometimes he can't? What kind of message is that?

As for dominating you, that is something you can set up or prevent from the start. Get the pup to puppy class as early as recommended. Read some books on positive pet training, and remember that there is no switch to throw when the dog becomes adult. Whatever you allow as a puppy you will have to live with as an adult. If those biting games and tugging socks is cute when he is 8 weeks, it won't be when he is 8 years.

And just as you don't want a "dominating dog" neither do you want a submissive one. Somewhere in the middle, confident but willing to be led, is best. And you don't have to a dominatrix to have a good solid discipline for your dog. Discipline and training actually make your bond with your dog BETTER not worse.

I had a toy poodle as a kid, until I was about 21 yrs old. He was a great dog, he did not yap a lot. But my favorite breed of dog is the Boston Terrier, I have never met a bad one. I have had 2, and my sister had 3 of them. They are a one person to a whole family dog. They love everyone, especially kids. They are a very low maintanece dog. I also had a Pomaranian. All of my dogs have lived to be 17 to 18 yrs. When I was a kid, we did ot have a fenced in yard and our dogs were ot on dog runs, our dogs were all killed by being run over by a car. Be a resposible pet owner, keep your pet safe(like I do, ulike my parents).I do beleive good pets are a result of good owners.Remember that a dog is a lifetime commitment.

Poodles are easier to train, and their dispositions are better too, sorry shih tzu, lovers.
Training is key to any dog owners happiness, dogs are quite content to be annoying. They do yap, but are quiet when taught properly and they don't yap all the time, anyway.

I have had all kinds of breeds... and by far i think the Shelties
are the best dog. I have one a female, and she is sooooo
smart. This is my second one. I have several good friends
that have gotton one because of me. And they are happy with
the decision. They are happy dogs, easy to train.
