Map is correct. Contrary to the blathering of naive pinheads with no experience in corrections other than what they see in a movie, TV and other distractions are a greater benefit to the security of the institution and the safety of the staff than to the inmate. One of the quietest and most safe periods in an institution is the time when General Hospital is on the air. Never understood why they picked General Hospital, but it seems to have some magical effect.

As for paranoia, one who suffers from it will be paranoid whether the tv is on or not.

Yes, I think they should. When you take everything away from a person and make them less human that is when you get violence. They are locked up to serve their time but we need to treat them more like people instead of numbers. It is terrible in prison. The constand fear a prisoner must live with 24/7 causes a paranoid person and violence.

Just think that you have no PRIVACY none at all. You shower in front of cameras, must be strip searched constantly (while they look up your butt and genitals and mouth and touch you), you are shackled every time you leave your cell, you eat garbage (anything the general public does not want), you work in a job for $.10 per hour (to buy deodorant, shave cream etc), and you must go to bed at 10 pm (lights out), and get up at dawn to work again, and then the only extras you get is church on Sundays, Library on occassion, gym for maybe one hour 3x week, and television for an hour and half.

If you think this sounds too cushy, you try it. It is HELL.

I don't know about it making people violent and paranoid, and I would hope that there would be limits to what they can watch.

My problem is that taxes are paying for these goofs to watch TV and I have to struggle to pay my satellite/cable bill every month. TV doensn't really strike me as a fundamental right.

I think they provide TV because it keeps em quiet and gives them something to do rather than get all restless.

I believe they should earn the privilege. Good behavior and you get some TV time. I do not believe it makes them more violent and/or paranoid.. I'd have to say being next to Bubba in the next cell would do that. Someone said that jail is hell..... maybe they should be a law abiding citizens and they wont have to go there? Its supposed to be punishment!

criminals in the USA are usually repeat offenders over and over again cause their time in our prisons isn't so bad, they get taken care of and don't have to work , it's like a reward. tv is allowed 24/7 in some prisons, especially when the criminals are pretending to be ill and stay inside the medical sections.... my old man has spent decades in and out and our legal system is a failure.... my old man believes he's smarter than everyone else.... he's a sociopath and this is his bad choices...... criminals in some countries (such as japan) rarely return back to prison over and over again unless they are mentally ill or doing business on the inside

It keeps them occupied. The last thing you want to do is house a bunch of men in a place with absolutely nothing to do. If nothing else activities, not just TV, keep the cons busy and reduce tension. It creates a safer environment for the guards and the cons.

In some cases, but not in all.
Say for instance a person suffering from serious schizophrenia would believe that the T.V is speaking to them,

I do not agree with rapists, murderes or criminals watching such things of the nature of their crimes on television, as some feel glorified, I think to watch the news and movies etc, is a good thing.

But this right is to be earned, as our taxes are funding much of these facilities
