Shape and format, as well as the particular camera brands and card readers that use them. I've used them both in digital cameras that required each one, and I'm not aware of any difference in performance or ease of use.
In general, more card readers can handle the SD format than the XD. I had to hunt pretty hard to find one that could accomodate both cards. One could accomodate the XD with an adapter, but I never could find the adapter. When I found a card reader that handled both (The Wolverine FlashPac--a 40mg hard drive that stores photos directly off the memory card) it could accomodate 7 different kinds of cards, one of which was for the camera I hadn't bought yet!

each and every digital camera has a particular card format as determined through the producer. you should use yet another form of card then the only they say to apply. it would properly be SD, XD, CF, and so on. the biggest skill and most inexpensive are the CF (compact flash). Norm

Xd cards are mostly supported only by Fujifilm and Olympus, and lack the lock data feature that SD cards have. SD cards are more widely supported, and slighly larger than Xd's anyway. My opinon? If your using lots of dofferent media types, go with SD, but if all you're doing is taking pictures, stick with Xd. Hope that helped!
